February is Drug-Free Hawaii Awareness Month

Last fall SAMHSA released the Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit to address overdose by educating and engaging key audiences. A comprehensive resource, the toolkit targets specific constituents and professionals as important points of intervention to prevent overdose, recognize the symptoms of overdose, and respond if opioid overdose has taken place.

 

Drug Tests Don't Deter Teens From Using Drugs, Study Finds

This study suggests that school-imposed drug tests may not be as effective as creating a positive school environment in reducing marijuana use.

 

Over a six-year period, Ecstasy-related emergency department visits rose 128 percent for those younger than 21

In 2011, over 10,000 teens and young adults were hospitalized for reasons related to using Ecstasy, or "Molly". This number reflects a 128% increase in emergency room visits for patients under the age of 21 who use Ecstasy since 2005.

 

More than Half of 12th Grade Binge Drinkers Drink Ten or More Drinks in a Row

Binge drinking is defined as drinking five or more drinks in a row. Over half of polled binge-drinking 12th graders in this national study report drinking double or more that amount.
