The following is a collection of resources. For complete versions please follow the links provided.
|
(SAMHSA News Release, November 2012)More than a quarter of the American population who are too young to drink are doing so anyway according to a new report issued today by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Although there has been progress in reducing the extent of underage drinking in recent years, particularly among those aged 17 and younger, the rates of underage drinking are still unacceptably high.
(Drugfree.org, February 2013)
A government report released last month found the number of emergency room visits involving energy drinks doubled from 2007 to 2011, reaching more than 20,000. The report from SAMHSA found most cases involved teens or young adults. Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM)SAM is an alliance of organizations and individuals dedicated to a health-first approach to marijuana policy. SAM is bipartisan. Made up of medical doctors, lawmakers, treatment providers, preventionists, teachers, law enforcement officers and others who seek a middle road between incarceration and legalization.

It has been an honor for me to play a role in the development of our treatment and prevention workforces. One of the best aspects of my job was getting to know almost all of you working in the addiction treatment field across the state, or wanting to be in this field, and your dedication to quality services. Hawaii Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) County Level Reports 2011
County level results from the 2011 Hawaii Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) are now available for the first time. Hawaii expanded the sampling frame to include more students which greatly increases the information we can access about the risk behaviors and health status of Hawaii's youth.
Results from the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) Examines trends in illicit drug use from 2010 to 2011 and from 2002-2011 among Americans 12 and older and compares differences by age group and gender. Also discusses disparities in the need for specialized treatment versus those who actually receive it.
(SAMHSA, September 2012) Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) Alcohol is the most commonly used drug, and its abuse contributes to deaths, injuries, disease, crime, social disorder and family disintegration. PIRE scientists study how alcohol causes and exacerbates these problems and what policies and programs can prevent alcohol-related problems. |
