Slowly Changing Dimensions in SSIS

On August 30, Brett Neuman, Manager Consultant at StatSlice Systems, published a blog regarding changing dimensions in SSIS. One of the most critical pieces of any data warehouse is how you handle dimensions. Due to the slowly changing nature of the data in a dimension table, we handle the processing of these tables quite differently. To read the full blog, click here .

Announcements

Announcing the Upcoming Release of Our "Microsoft Business Intelligence Tools for Excel Analysts" Book!

We are pleased to announce the upcoming release of our book with Wiley scheduled for general release in March 2014. The book is a collaboration between Jared Decker and Bernard Wehbe (co-founders of StatSlice) and Michael Alexander, who has written several Access and Excel books. The book can be pre-ordered here. The authors are currently working diligently on the content and should be wrapping up a draft in the next couple of months.

This book is written from a business analyst's point of view. The aim is to make accessible the rich set of Business Intelligence tools available in the latest Microsoft SQL Server 2012 release. This is driven by new features that have made the world of Business Intelligence and Analytics more accessible to the business user and blurred the lines between desktop tools like Excel and enterprise tools like SQL Server and Sharepoint.

Big SQL Analytics: Investigation Update

A couple of months back, I announced that the StatSlice team is in the process of investigating several "Big SQL" Analytics tools. Since the announcement, we have completed POCs with a few of the tools and delivered one heavily-attended webinar on Amazon Redshift. We also have two webinars on the subject scheduled for this month and the next. Next month's webinar will address the SQL tool offered by Cloudera on Hadoop to see how it stacks up against Redshift and other tools in the space.

Finally, I am happy to report that one of our clients has chosen to implement a production Redshift proof-of-concept as a result of our efforts. The development of the system moved very fast, and we were able to overcome all the technical obstacles without too much difficulty. We will keep you posted on the success that we are seeing with these tools and their ability to help clients overcome business problems.
