Letter from GBRW President
Mary Windsor Saggus

Dear  :

I am a summer person. I love a beach, a lake, a river, a pool, or even a pond under the right circumstances. My love of summer goes back to childhood when I spent hours and hours in and around water, when I only wore shoes on Sunday, and played outside until dark. I can still conjure that wonderful feeling of childhood when the air is thick and the sun is beating down.

For all of that love of summer, December is my favorite month. December, to me, is magical. I love the music, the twinkly lights, the crisp air, the children, and the spirit of the season. In addition to Christmas, at my house we celebrate our anniversary, 37 years, and my husband's birthday, lots of years. All in all, December is a crazy, busy month that somehow always manages to make me feel peaceful. That's the magic of Christmas.

I keep hearing that we Republicans are angry, but frankly, I don't see it. Being so in love with summer, December, my family, not to mention my country leaves me no time or space for anger, and it seems that most of you are a lot like me. Let's call ourselves the "un-angry" and laugh at those who want to label us. What a concept! We can have strong opinions, work hard, and be passionate. Sometimes we will win and sometimes we will lose. All the time we can be happy and "un-angry."

May your Christmas be filled with the love of family, peace in your heart, and happiness beyond measure.

Merry Christmas!

Sincerely,

Mary Windsor

Christmas Message from President Ronald Reagan circa 1981

"Nancy and I are very happy to send our warmest greetings and best wishes to all those who are celebrating Christmas. We join with Americans everywhere in recognizing the sense of renewed hope and comfort this joyous season brings to our nation and the world.

The Nativity story of nearly twenty centuries ago is known by all faiths as a hymn to the brotherhood of man. For Christians, it is the fulfillment of age-old prophecies and the reaffirmation of God's great love for all of us. Through a generous Heavenly Father's gift of His Son, hope and compassion entered a world weary with fear and despair and changed it for all time.

On Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Christ with prayer, feasting, and great merriment. But, most of all, we experience it in our hearts. For, more than just a day, Christmas is a state of mind. It is found throughout the year whenever faith overcomes doubt, hope conquers despair, and love triumphs over hate. It is present when men of any creed bring love and understanding to the hearts of their fellow man.

The feeling is seen in the wondrous faces of children and in the hopeful eyes of the aged. It overflows the hearts of cheerful givers and the souls of the caring. And it is reflected in the brilliant colors, joyful sounds, and beauty of the winter season.

Let us resolve to honor this spirit of Christmas and strive to keep it throughout the year.

Nancy and I ask you to join us in a prayer that prudence, wisdom, and understanding might descend on the people of all nations' so that during the year ahead we may realize an ancient and wondrous dream: 'peace on earth, goodwill toward men.'"

President Ronald Reagan

Minutes from November Meeting

I. Call to order

President Mary Saggus called the regular meeting of the Greater Birmingham Republican Women to order at 12:00 pm on November 12, 2012 at the B&A Warehouse.

II. Invocation

Darlene Higginbotham led the invocation asking that we remember those that have been affected by the storm Sandy. Jennifer Zimmerman told us that in 1945 Brandon Weeks (from Birmingham) proposed the celebration of all veterans, not just those that has served in WWI. This led to the first Veterans day is 1947. Weeks has been called the "Father of Veteran's Day.

Mary Saggus discussed the grief process and what we might be going through regarding the recent election. She discussed Noel Galloway and the inspiration that he espoused about living without bitterness.

The minutes were presented by Kay Harlow. Elene Stovall gave the treasurerer's report. Mary Saggus recognized and welcomed our guests.

III. Speaker

Janie Dollar introduced our guest speaker TJ Malony - our executive director of the Alabama Republican Party. In his speech, Mr. Malony reminded us of the history of Alabama and how the pyramid for electing Republicans is being executed from the top. We are making headway into the Black Belt. Excellent candidates are emerging and changing at the lowest levels. We are building a strong foundation. It took us 136 years to get a Republican majority.

In order to have national viability we have to attract minorities and youth. We have 30 Republican Governors, we have a deep bench. We have a lot of growing pains to go through. We have to change our demographics and hold on to our Conservative principles.

There was a comment regarding the adding of charter schools to our platform as an issue that would attract minorities.

TJ complimented Diane Shaw on her great work with leading the volunteers.

When Janie Dollar was presenting TJ with the speaker's gift; she also recognized Fancy Goods for being the source of the gift.

Vicki Bailey recognized Mary Francis for being so dedicated as well as the other candidates for being such great candidates.

IV. Adjournment

Mary Saggus adjourned the meeting at 12:43pm.
