Greetings from United Way! What makes United Way different... Citizen's Review Panels also known as CRP's in our office are just one way that United Way is different from other not-for-profits. Each year we fundraise and then to help us determine HOW to allocate funds, we ask the public to participate in CRP's to determine, essentially, WHO gets HOW MUCH. If you are interested in the process OR better yet, have time to participate and score our agencies on Thursday, February 26th at the Department of Human Services, please email or call me and I can sign you up. You do not have to be a donor to participate but you need to live in our coverage area (Chippewa, Luce or Mackinac County). This is a GREAT way to learn about the nuts and bolts of United Way and all the mysterious and awesome things that United Way, along with the 15 agencies asking for funds this year, do to make our community a better place to live.
Together we can be the difference.

Volunteer of the Month
| |
Do you know someone who volunteers their time and is under appreciated? Would you like to see a group or business recognized for their hard work and generosity? The United Way's Volunteer Center is constantly searching the community for people we can shine the spotlight on.
Nominations for the Volunteer of the Month can be submitted by anyone for individual, and community partner categories. Winners are selected monthly, and each winner is surprised with a rally of recognition where they receive a framed certificate and and other tokens of appreciation. Individuals will also receive a certificate for lunch for two at a local eatery.
To nominate and individual, group, or business as our Volunteer of the Month, fill out the nomination form, or just email Stephen and tell him why your nominee deserves to be recognized!
Check out the United Way website to see more of our past winners!

Eastern Upper Peninsula Transition Council - Community Conversation Event
Four out of five high school students with disabilities say they plan to work during summer break. Yet fewer than half of that number actually landed a job this past summer. In fact, only 14.3% of students with disabilities in Michigan had summer employment in 2014. Youth with disabilities are employed at a rate that is 50% less than their general education peers (US Department of Labor).
The Eastern Upper Peninsula Transition Council is hoping to change those statistics by connecting students with disabilities with jobs. One of the first efforts of this group is to invite the community to an evening of conversation and appetizers in hopes of gathering ideas, untapped resources, and better connections between schools, local businesses, and community connections.
The Community Conversation is scheduled for February 18, 2015 at 6:00pm at Lake Superior State University's Cisler Center. The event is open to anyone interested in improving employment and community involvement for youth with disabilities. Businesses and community leaders, local policymakers, faith communities, youth agencies, and parents are especially encouraged to attend.
For more information or to RSVP, contact Tammy Hazley at (906)259-2502 or thazley@eup.k12.mi.us

| Gros Cap Students Give Back for MLK Day | |
Students from Gros Cap school in Moran Township partnered with the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula to help out seniors and veterans living in Mackinac county as part of the MLK National Day of Service. Members of Gros Cap's students council identified veterans and seniors as a group they wanted to try and help out, and brainstormed a project to do just that.
On Monday, January 26th, a group of Gros Cap students and teachers, along with United Way Volunteer Coordinator Steve Carey and Americorp Vista Briana Beauliu from the EUPISD, set out in St. Igance to shovel for residents who were struggling to remove snow from their walkways. Students split up into three groups and shoveled driveways, cleared porches, dug out paths paths, and even raked snow off roofs for several seniors and veterans living in. St. Ignace.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to get out an help in the community and got to experience just one way even a group of youths can make a big difference in the lives of their neighbors.

Shovels and supplies for the project were supplied by a mini-grant through the Michigan Community Service Corporation. Thanks to the students and staff at Gros Cap schools and the area Americorps members who helped promote the project and identify recipients!
