The Real Value of Your Donation

'Tis the season for giving!

While you are planning what gifts you will give the people on your list this holiday season, remember to consider a gift to a local non-profit. And as any budget-conscious holiday shopper does, look for ways to get the biggest bang for your buck. So if you are going to make a charitable donation this year, consider opportunities to give in a way that multiplies your donation so it can have an even greater impact.

How can you measure the impact of your donation in terms of the value it has for a charity? Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Company Matching Funds - Does your employer match charitable donations? Some companies have a matching gift program that matches employee donations to non-profits dollar-for-dollar. With an employer match, your $1 donation could easily become a $2 donation! Or perhaps even more, as some matching programs are even more generous.
  • Matching Grants - Non-profit agencies have opportunities and access to apply for matching grant funds. These may be available through state or government grant programs, or local grants through organizations such as Rotary. Dollars available for a matching grant may include individual donor contributions as well as company matching gifts, increasing the value of the donor's dollar even more.
  • Tax Deductions - While the dollars you might save through a personal tax deduction do not multiply the donation to the non-profit, they do provide you with added incentive and the ability to be more generous in your contribution.
So as you consider a charitable gift this year, keep in mind that United Way actively seeks to maximize donor contributions where possible through matching grants, allowing your dollars to have an even greater impact on the local community.

Together we can be the difference.

Do you know how the United Way distributes the money YOU donate?

If not...why not learn how???big-bills-money.jpg

It is simple.  Email tracey@unitedwayeup.org to tell Tracey you are interested.  You DO NOT have to be a donor to participate.  The date is set for Thursday, February 26th at the Department of Human Services office on 3 Mile Road in SSM.  You can choose to stay all day or work out a personalized shift that fits your schedule.  You will learn a lot and it is FUN.

Happy Holidays!

Tis the season to be jolly, but some of your clients may not be so thrilled with the idea of having to figure out where Christmas will come from this year.

There are many options for them this time of year, no child should go without; no family should be without a Christmas dinner of some sort to share. Our spirit should be filled with giving and joy, not stress and frustration.

If you see someone struggling, let them know they can call United Way of the EUP and speak to either myself or Stephen Carey to discuss possible resources that could help.
If you, or people you know, would like to discuss finances - especially if you're considering not paying an important bill (like rent or utilities) so your child can have a memorable Christmas - please contact me. We can discuss resources that might be available to you, ways to better manage your money so all of your bills are getting paid, and ideas to implement for next year so you don't find yourself in this same stressful situation!

I can be reached by email at americorps@unitedwayeup.org or by phone 906-632-3700 ext. 4#

If you're a Head Start parent in the Cedarville area, please join us Tuesday, December 2 at 6 p.m. at the Head Start school for an informal workshop "Don't Go Broke!" We'll discuss the basics of setting up a spending plan, how to ease your money stress, and ways you might be able to get ahead of your bills.

A "Chili" Night in Sault Ste. Marie

Eastern UP residents braved an early November storm to enjoy the United Way's annual Chili Cookoff on the 11th.  This popular event featured organizations and businesses from across the Eastern Upper Peninsula testing their personal chili recipes to determine region's best.

Our panel of distinguished judges helped choose the best recipes. Here Dr. Pledger and Alan LaVictor sample some chili

Four-hundred, sixty-five guests were on hand to sample chili, listen to a variety of local music acts, and support the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. As a thank you for their service, the twenty-six area veterans in attendance were given free admission to the event. This year featured a 1980's Movie theme and teams were up for the challenge with classics such as Ghostbusters, Caddie Shack, A Christmas Story, and The Muppets represented in the booth decorations. In addition to chili and music the Crafts for a Cause group had deserts for sale, Soo Brewing Company provided free Root Beer, and the Great Start Collaborative brought a variety of crafts and activities for the kids in attendance. Through the event, $4,000 was raised to support the United Way.

Four local music acts took turns entertaining the cookoff attendees.

"We are thankful for the great support we get from the community, as well as our partner agencies, for this event. We tried out a few new ideas this year, and it all seemed to go well. Everyone looked like they had fun with the 80's movie theme, we're already thinking up new ideas for next year," Tracey Laitinen, Executive Director United Way of the EUP.

Teams were on board with the 80's Movie theme. Diane Peppler's decorations were inspired by A Christmas Story, complete with customized sweaters.

Twenty-one teams participated bringing 25 different recipes of chili to compete in the Hot, Mild, White Chili, Vegetarian, and Professional categories. The coveted People's Choice Award, choses by votes from the cookoff attendees, went to the Border Patrol for the second year in a row. Families Volunteer to Help Families

The Sault Area Middle School and the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula came together to help Chippewa County families enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Students at the Middle school held a food drive to collect non-perishable, Thanksgiving themed, food items during the month of November. The US Coast Guard, and Hoover Precision held food drives to contribute to the project as well. Mrs. Donaldson's home room class at the Middle School collected the most food bringing 290 items with over 1350 non-perishable items being donated in all. Family Video of Sault Sainte Marie donated Turkeys to round out the project.

Turkey's donated by Family Video, ready to get handed out.

On the 22nd, in conjunction with National Family Volunteer Day, 20 volunteers helped pack the collected food into baskets, with each one containing a complete Thanksgiving Dinner. Through the event food baskets were assembled for 65 area families.
