November 2014 ENewsletter

Greetings from United Way!

I hope you are staying warm!

I recently attended the U.P. Nonprofit Conference in Marquette and each time I go, I bring back great things that I can implement right away to save us time and money.  I would encourage you to attend if you are work for a nonprofit or if you volunteer! More info can be found at: https://glcyd.org/. You will also be able to see the Volunteers that won for best in the U.P.-again Mr. George Major was honored from Luce County!!!

In listening to the panel of foundations that spoke at the end of the day at the conference it was interesting to learn more about what their goals are and how they want to fund us as not-for-profits (NFP).

From L to R - Rob Collier, Council of Michigan Foundations; Gary LaPlant, Community Foundation for the Upper Peninsula; Jim LaJoie, Superior Health Foundation;  Laura Katers Reilly, Shiras Institute

I am including 2 charts below from the Michigan Association of Nonprofits and the Council of Michigan Foundations.  This is great information for the public and especially us as NFPs to be aware of.

Volunteer of the Month

Do you know someone who volunteers their time and is under appreciated? Would you like to see a group or business recognized for their hard work and generosity? The United Way's Volunteer Center is constantly searching the community for people we can shine the spotlight on.

Nominations for the Volunteer of the Month can be submitted by anyone for individual, and community partner categories. Winners are selected monthly, and each winner is surprised with a rally of recognition where they receive a framed certificate and and other tokens of appreciation. Individuals will also receive a certificate for lunch for two at a local eatery.

To nominate and individual, group, or business as our Volunteer of the Month, fill out the nomination form, or just email Stephen and tell him why your nominee deserves to be recognized!

Check out the United Way website to see more of our past winners!

Laker's Hockey serves up Spaghetti

The United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula held their annual Laker Hockey Spaghetti Dinner on September 29th at Christopher Columbus Hall in Sault Ste. Marie.  This popular event provides guests the opportunity to get served a dinner of CC Hall spaghetti and meatballs by players from the Lake Superior State Men's Hockey Team.

Many guests took the opportunity to chat with Laker's players and coaches and get a feel for the team prior to their season opener on Saturday, while kids in attendance tracked down players to collect each team member's signature on their place-mat.

Over the course of the evening 224 dine-in and take-out dinners were served, amounting to roughly 896 meatballs served on the night.

Thanks to the hard work of the crew at the CC Hall, the Lakers players and all the volunteers, $2,098 was brought in to help support the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

Pigskins and Pulled Pork!

The weather was cold but the food was warm at the Soo Blue Devils Football final home game of the season. The United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula and UP in Smoke Barbecue were on hand to host a community pig roast.  Fernelius Hyundai of Sault Sainte Marie purchased a pig at the Chippewa County fair and donated it to the United Way for the event, and Love Meat processed it. Dusty and Dawn Wilcox from UP in Smoke Barbecue did the cooking and helped the United Way staff and volunteers serve pulled-pork, baked beans, and potato salad to fans at the football game.

Fans at the game were able to enjoy pulled pork from UP in Smoke Barbecue with baked beans and potato salad

The Pig Roasted started an hour before the game and went through half-time. During that time 100 pulled-pork dinners were served and $600 was raised to help support the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Thanks go out to UP in Smoke Barbecue for cooking, Fernelius Hyundai for donating the pig, Love Meats for processing, and the Sault Boosters Club for supporting this event!

Food service started at 6pm and the early bird fans were ready to jump in line.
