Greetings from United Way!

What makes United Way different...

Citizen's Review Panels also known as CRP's in our office are just one way that United Way is different from other not-for-profits.

Each year we fundraise and then to help us determine HOW to allocate funds, we ask the public to participate in CRP's to determine, essentially, WHO gets HOW MUCH.

If you are interested in the process OR better yet, have time to participate and score our agencies on Thursday, February 13th, please email or call me and I can sign you up.  You do not have to be a donor to participate but you need to live in our coverage area (Chippewa, Luce or Mackinac County).

This is a GREAT way to learn about the nuts and bolts of United Way and all the mysterious and awesome things that United Way, along with the 18 agencies asking for funds this year, do to make our community a better place to live.

Together we can be the difference.

AmeriCorps Progress Update

Do you have clients that would benefit from one- on-one financial coaching? Did you know you're now able to refer families and individuals for FREE budgeting assistance that is tailored to their individual needs? Call me to talk about how your organization can benefit from this FREE service. I can be reached by email americorps@unitedwayeup.org or call 906-632-3700 ext. 4. Through the AmeriCorps Michigan program, I am serving all three of our Eastern Upper Peninsula counties through January 2015 as a Financial Empowerment Coach. I can arrange to meet your clients in your office on a day they're already scheduled to be there, or we can set up a time to meet at a local library, coffee shop or anywhere else they're comfortable with. (Please note however, I cannot make in-home visits.) I also hold workshops where I meet with small groups of people and show them how to set up a monthly household budget, help them create a plan for goals they've set for themselves, and give them tips on making their dollar stretch. Workshops will be held in Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac counties throughout the year.

Upcoming Budget Workshop Dates:

Currently, I have 3 scheduled workshops in Sault Ste. Marie, and continue to look for venues willing to host more - if you have a conference room or out of the way space that can seat at least 6 people comfortably, please contact me (having a blank wall space or projector screen is also helpful).

Dates for Sault Ste. Marie workshops are: February 21, 1 to 2 p.m.; March 19, 10 to 11 a.m.; and April 16, noon to 1 p.m. All of these workshops are being held in the conference room of United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula located on the 2nd floor of 511 Ashmun St. Participants must RSVP, as space is limited. Those interested can email americorps@unitedwayeup.org or call 906-632-3700 ext. 4 to sign up (caseworkers and organizations are welcome to call on behalf of their clients - please provide clients name and contact information so I am able to follow up.)

I will also be providing a Budgeting & Frugal Living class during the Winter Break for Knowledge, held March 1st at Tahquamenon Area Schools in Newberry. More information on class times and who to contact to register will be made available soon.

Santa came to town-CORRECTION

December 4th was the annual Luce County Merry Christmas Community Dinner held at the American Legion Hall in Newberry. Every year the Luce County Link, The Newberry High School Key Club, The Newberry Area Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of the EUP partner to plan this community event.

Santa, Mrs. Clause, and the Newberry area Girl Scouts sign Christmas Carols

Santa and Mrs. Claus came to light the community tree in front of the American Legion and then joined the Newberry area Girl Scouts in signing Christmas Carols. Afterwards everyone was invited inside for a community dinner featuring turkey with all the trimmings with 250 meals being served. Over 300 children waiting in line for a chance to get a picture with Santa and Mrs. Claus. In addition to a warm dinner and visits with Santa, the evening also featured music provided by DJ Sparky, Travis Freeman from Oldies 93 broadcasting live, and a silent auction of Christmas ornaments decorated by Luce County students and artists.

The elves took a moment for a picture before Santa showed up and put them to work
Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy dinner and see Santa, and to all the volunteers and groups that worked hard to plan and put on this great community
event!

Protect the Charitable Tax Deduction! #ProtectGiving As political leaders in Washington, D.C. focus on deficit reduction and tax reform, there are proposed harmful changes to the charitable tax deduction. Doing away with the charitable deduction at a time when people are still reeling from the recession and facing the consequences of government cutbacks is bad timing and bad logic. Add your voice to the effort by signing the change.org petition to protect giving.

Service Learning students give back for MLK Day

On January 20th, The United Way of the EUP and the Engadine Consolidated Schools partnered to assemble food baskets as part of the MLK National Day of Service. During the month of January Life Skills Teacher Mrs. Klobucher, and EUPISD Service Learning Americorps*VISTA Nicole Kilgore developed lessons plans where students from Mrs. Klubacher's 1rst hour Service Learning class listened to Martin Luther King, Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech and explored quotes on citizenship and service from Martin Luther King Jr. Each student created a poster with a pledge of one thing they would do for their school, their community, and their family. During the week of January 13-17, the students created brochures on nutritional eating.  On Monday, January 20th, the class assembled 24 food kits that were distributed to local families by the United Way and area AmeriCorps members later that day.

Students from Mrs. Klobucher's Service Learning class with some of the assembled food bags.

Through this project the Engadine School and the United Way were able to distribute food for over 50 Engadine area residents. Funding for this project was provided by grants through the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), Volunteer Centers of Michigan (VCM), Michigan Campus Compact (MiCC), and The LEAGUE Michigan.

Packed food bag along with brochures created by the Service Learning class in Engadine.

The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service - a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

Congress Agrees on Federal Spending through September

Congress has come to an agreement on federal spending through September 30th. This bill, which was negotiated by House Republicans and Senate Democrats, is also supported by the White House. It creates the specific categories of spending that add up to the budget numbers agreed upon in December. There are several important items of note for our students and work:

  • Pell Grant Increases: The Pell Grant for academic year 2014-15 will increase to $5730. The program is also fully funded.
  • Pell Grant Recipient Graduation Rates: The Department of Education will now be required to collect Pell grant recipient graduation rates by institution and release the data to the public by reporting it to Congress. Students, and advisors, will now be able to know how well an institution serves low-income students.
    • While this is great news, the full effect will take a few years to kick in as the first full six-year graduation numbers won't be available until 2019.
  • First in the World: The President's First in the World grant was funded at $75 million. This will provide grants to institutions of higher education to deliver tested methods of increasing affordability and improving outcomes for low-income students.
    • We don't anticipate that non-profits will be eligible for this grant, but it will provide funding for colleges and universities to better serve our student population. It may also be an opportunity for college access programs to partner with colleges and universities.
  • FAFSA Changes: With a small change to the FAFSA, foster care youth can now check a box on the form to identify as a foster care student. Doing so will supply them with additional information about possible funding programs for which they may qualify.
  • Higher Ed Well Funded All Around: TRIO, GEAR UP, Federal Work Study, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants, and Minority Serving Institutions will all receive an increase in funding.
    • Overall, the FY14 budget shows an increase to education spending. The total amount is just below the funding for FY12 and well above the FY13 spending.

If you have additional questions, please contact Carrie Warick at warickc@collegeaccess.org or 202-347-4848x203.
