Capital Campaign

Many thanks to the parents who attended one of the Capital Campaign Info Sessions on Nov. 6th!  We look forward to working with you as you begin to fundraise for our library and turf field.  Just a reminder that the parent goal is $400,000 over 3 years - each family's goal is $2,000.  We have already received 3 gifts for the capital campaign through the online giving site: www.setonhs.org/campaign.  Each gift referenced a current student!
Please complete the Response Sheet that was included in the folder that you received on Thursday.  We want you to tell us how you will assist with "friendraising" efforts!
Feel free to contact Monica Horton (mhorton@setonhs.org or 301-864-4532 x7338) if you didn't pick up campaign materials on Thursday or for more information.
Also, one last Capital Campaign Info Session will take place this Friday, Nov. 14 at 8am in the library.

November Remembrance

Dear Seton Family,
As the fall season approaches, the Catholic Church celebrates two very important feast days: All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Traditionally, this has been the time when we pray for those who are now deceased, but who have impacted our lives forever.
On these two days, we would like to pray for your loved ones at the masses celebrated at Elizabeth  Seton High School. Throughout the month of November, we would like to continue our prayer for your deceased family, friends, and members of the Seton Community by placing your names at the foot of the altar in the chapel where they will be remembered at morning and evening prayer and at every mass in the chapel.
Seton is a family, and it is our privilege to pray for your loved ones. We promise to pray for you, also, as a way to express our love and gratitude for one another.
We invite you to click on the link below and place on the enclosed form any names of family members, friends, or alumnae for whom you would like us to pray.
Let us use this month of November in which we celebrate Thanksgiving to thank God for all those who have gone before us, especially those who have left us an example of goodness and generosity.  May we be like-minded with them and one  with them in spirit and prayer!

May God bless each of you with the "light to know and the grace to do".
Gratefully,
Sister Ellen Marie Hagar '74
President

Clothing Drive for Native Americans

Please continue sending in NEW and GENTLY used items to the clothing collection for the Native Americans of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
Already facing sub-zero temperatures, living in the 3rd poorest county in the United States, without reliable electricity or clean drinking water, the men, women, and children of Pine Ridge are in particular need of these clothing items:

Coats, Jackets, Hats & Gloves
Sweaters, Shirts, and Pants
Shoes & Boots

In connection with Native American Heritage Month, Caroline Rosenberger '17 is currently running a collection for the Oglala Lakota Sioux Native Americans. While visiting the reservation in South Dakota, she was moved by the lack of basic necessities and the everyday challenges they face in the extreme poverty in which they live.
The clothing is going to be received by friends at the Singing Horse Trading Post http://www.singinghorse.net/index.htm and distributed directly to families in need on the reservation. As they say in the Lakota language, Philamayaye! (Thank you!)

If you would like more information about the Pine Ridge Reservation or Native American Heritage Month, please e-mail crosenberger17@setonhs.org .
Read President Barak Obama's proclamation calling upon "all Americans to commemorate this month with appropriate programs and activities, and to celebrate November 28, 2014, as Native American Heritage Day." http://www.bia.gov/DocumentLibrary/HeritageMonth/

Watson Scholarship

Watson Scholarship:  The Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship Program recognizes academic excellence among high school students planning to pursue a traditional baccalaureate degree at an accredited four-year US college. Winners are selected based on SAT/ACT scores, leadership, and junior year academic performance. Financial need is not a factor in determining winners. Any amounts awarded take into account the cost of the institution's tuition and financial need, and can range from $2,000 to $8,000 per year. Please note the application deadline for the 2015-2016 term is December 15, 2014. For more information, call 1-866-258-0625.

Junior Parents:

Junior parents: If your daughter is interested in Engineering, the University of Maryland's Clark Engineering School still has some spaces left in their Pre-College Scholars Program. This program provides extensive SAT prep as well as work on some hands on engineering projects. Students must commit to attending day long workshops two Saturdays per month at the university. See http://www.engrscholarships.umd.edu/precollege-scholars-program for more information or contact Mrs. Roeder in guidance, mroeder@setonhs.org.

Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award

Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award - It's What You Do That Counts!
Are you a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your community or school? Who sees challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? If you are a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then you may be eligible to win a Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as: fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest. Soroptimist is an organization of women whose members volunteer in their communities, often working on the same problems that you do. Although we realize that volunteering is its own reward, we also know it feels good to be recognized for your actions. And that's why we sponsor this award. Visit http://www.soroptimist.org/whoweare/program-violet-richardson-award.html for information and visit http://www.soroptimist.org/members/program/programdocs/violetrichardsonaward/english/vraapplication-writeable.pdf for the application.
