Septic Systems 101 - How To Maintain
Do's and Don'ts of Maintaining the System
  1. Do pump frequently - every 3 to 5 years depending on how many people live in the house and the size of the system
  2. Do conserve water - flooding the drain field with excess water slows or stops treatment processes
  3. Do plant grass over the system - tree and shrub roots can damage the drain field
  4. Don't flush :  household chemicals, gasoline, oil, pesticides, anti-freeze, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, diapers, cat litter, paper towels, and cotton swabs.  These can stress or destroy the biological treatment that takes place in the system
  5. Don't park or drive on the system - it can compact the soil in the drain field or damage other components
  6. Don't let drains from the roof, sump pump or other water drainage systems flood the drain field, which can possibly cause the plumbing to back up
