Even if you don't have a home security system, there are a number of things you can do to protect your home while you are away:

• trim shrubs to eliminate hiding places under windows and near doors
• don't put valuables near a window where they can be easily seen
• keep small valuables in a safe
• use a timer to turn lights off and on
• keep outdoor lights on at night
• have a home-security warning sign (even if you don't have a system in place)
• don't keep a key under your doormat!
• replace standard-issue 3/4 inch lockset-plate screws with heftier 3 inch ones
• put in a deadbolt - see video
