Greetings!
It's finally time to start the spring yard cleanup. In addition to pruning back butterfly bushes and any ornamental grasses that you didn't cut down in the fall, take a look at your rose bushes and see what needs pruning. See you in the garden!

Pruning Roses

The time to prune roses is when the buds begin to swell.  Make sure you have a small pair of bypass hand shears for the thinner branches, and long handled loppers for the thicker canes.

Start by removing the dead canes, which usually look shriveled and blackened.

Then look for and remove any suckers, which are new plants growing up from the roots of the old, or host, plant.  If you just cut them back they will regrow, so you'll need to sever them from the plant below soil level.

Next prune any canes that are thinner than a pencil, cross or rub against each other.  If you wish, you can then prune the remaining healthy canes into a desired shape.
