When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered,
he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

From the Principal
The Journey
Ever been on a long trip? Perhaps driving somewhere on Spring Break, or maybe a summer family vacation? I have fond memories of taking family trips to Sea World in Ohio, and also to visit grandparents in Wisconsin while growing up. As some of you may know, I have seven brothers and sisters, and so all of us would pack into our van and hit the road! As you might imagine, some trips seemed longer than others...but in every case we made it to our destination safely and had great stories to tell. Often times, the stories of the trip were as memorable as the time we spent at the destination.
Just as we take physical journeys in life, we also take spiritual journeys. During this time of Lent, we pause and take a look at our spiritual journey, reflecting on our tremendous need for our Savior because of our sin. As we move through each day, and spend time worshiping during special Lenten services, we connect with each other, recognizing our sin and collectively look forward to the hope we have in Christ. The journey is important, because often times we can become so wrapped up in what life has to offer that we lose sight of who we are, and whose we are. What an important time in the year for us, especially since we know how the Lenten season ends...
As we approach Holy Week, my prayer is that we all have an opportunity to pause and recognize the magnificent magnitude of the sacrifice Jesus made for us, and celebrate together the joyous resurrection of our Savior. I pray your journey has been and will continue to be tied to Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, so that he may live in you, and you in him!
God's blessings and Go Cadets!

From the Nurse
Do you ever have one of those "my fingers are puffy, my shoes feel tight, and I have bags under my eyes" kinds of days? Sodium, rather, too much sodium may be the culprit. Sodium affects not just our appearance, but also our heart health. This excess fluid can cause our hearts to overwork.
Sodium overload is a major health problem in the United States. On average, we Americans consume more than 3,400 mg sodium every day. The American Heart Association recommends that we consume no more than 1,500 mg every day. A large part of this over-consumption is because of our food supply. More than 75% comes from processed and restaurant foods and is not just the first things that come to our minds such as French fries and potato chips. The sodium monster lurks everywhere. ¼ teaspoon of salt contains 600 mg sodium and 1 teaspoon contains 2,400 mg sodium - way over the daily recommended amount. Look over the following "Salty Six":
- Breads and rolls - we have these several times every day. Find a lower sodium variety (yes, it will require us to read the label.)
- Cold cuts/cured meats-6 thin slices of deli meat can be ½ of the daily recommended amount of sodium.
- Pizza - 1 slice with several toppings can again, be more than ½ of the daily recommended amount. Limit cheese and add more veggies as toppings.
- Poultry - this one is based mostly on preparation. Check labels for seasonings and add more fresh herbs to season.
- Soup - little is as fast as opening a can of soup for a quick meal BUT 1 cup of canned soup may contain 100-940 mg of sodium - more than ½ the daily amount of sodium recommended.
- Sandwiches/burgers - from fast food restaurants can contain more than 100% of your daily sodium. Try a ½ sandwich and a side salad. Sharing is always a nice thing to do if you are dining with a companion or take ½ home for lunch the next day.
Making small changes in your diet and food prep can have big payoffs with your health. Some other practices to put into place include limiting your portion sizes and consumption of processed foods, choosing fresh fruits and vegetables (canned may have sodium added for preservation), specify how you wish your food to be prepared when eating out and ask to have prepared without salt, taking control of what you are eating by cooking at home (it is fun and delicious), and choosing foods containing potassium as these counter the effects of sodium and may help to decrease your blood pressure. Remember also that sweet foods, including raisin bran and commercial cereals may contain added salt to enhance sweetness.
Spring is finally upon us - get outside and move and make great, healthy food.

Parents of upcoming seniors for the school year 2014-2015
There is an addition to the immunization laws for the state of Indiana for the upcoming school year which requires students in grade 12 to have a second meningitis immunization. The ONLY incoming seniors not needing this would be students who had their first meningitis immunization after the age of 16. Avoid that summertime rush and work on getting that now or maybe when you see your Health Care Provider for your student's annual physical exam. If you are unsure if your student needs this, please contact the school nurse at 483-1102 ext 235 or jreff@clhscadets.com.

Advancement
Rhonda Patterson, 2014 Auction Co-Chair, gives the inspiration for this year's theme.
Bridges. They are the literal structure that connects two land masses together over water. They provide passage to navigate cities like Fort Wayne, built on rivers. Old and new, Fort Wayne boasts beautiful architectural examples, including the Wells Street Bridge and the Martin Luther King Bridge.
Bridges are also used in a figurative sense, as a connecting or transitional phase that brings together two elements, for instance in a piece of music.
CLHS is building bridges. Present in our community since 1935, Concordia is uniting alumni and future cadets in Christ. Linking together our Lutheran churches and grade schools, CLHS is a bridge to bring together our Christian community.
One only has to observe the generations present at a CLHS football game, in the stands, in the practice fields, and on the playing field, to see the bridges we have built. Or attend a CLHS drama production, and witness the elementary children performing side by side with our talented cadets. Or read the Fort Wayne Newspapers, to be reminded of alumni and students who are working in our community to bring Christ to life, "being Jesus."
CLHS is Building Bridges on November 8, 2014, at Cadets in Cadence, striding together to serve our Lord.

Save the dates and let us know how you want to be involved!SGO Update You can still take advantage of an SGO donation before June 30, 2014 or in July when the new fiscal year starts. With the increased interest in SGO benefits statewide, our advice is to take advantage of the opportunity now! Of the $7.5 million available to Indiana donors, just over $1.2 million is available until June 30, 2014 when the state tax credit amount will be reset. While the general tax year-end rush is over, donations can still be made. Businesses, partnerships, and self-employed friends of Concordia who pay quarterly estimated taxes can especially benefit from SGO donations. Gifts to the SGO can be made many times throughout the year and many folks like the option of doubling their tax liability and gifting to the SGO to greatly reduce or eliminate their state taxes. Contact Stephanie Paradine, Director of Advancement, for more information at sparadine@clhscadets.com or (260) 483-1102.

Sport Physical Screenings 2014-15
Concordia Lutheran High School will be offering physical screenings for prospective athletes for the 2014-2015 school year, including incoming freshmen. The exams are scheduled for Thursday, May 29, at 5:30 p.m. at Concordia Lutheran High School. The cost will be $10.00 and this is an excellent opportunity to get the required physical completed, which will be handled by first class doctors, nurses, and athletic trainers. The procedure is as follows:
1. Pick up the physical form in the CLHS Athletic Office, or download a printable version by clicking here and then selecting the Physical Evaluation Form.
2. Fill out the front page and the fourth page. Be sure both the athlete and the
parent/guardian sign the form. NO PHYSICAL WILL BE GIVEN IF THE PAGES ARE
NOT COMPLETED AND SIGNED.
3. Make sure the parent/guardian signs the "Consent Acknowledgement and Release Form"
on the fourth page of the physical form. All insurance information must also be
completed.
4. Bring the completed form plus the $10.00 fee to the screening on May 29 beginning at 5:30
p.m. NO PHYSICAL WILL BE GIVEN WITHOUT THE PROPER FORM,
SIGNATURES, OR PAYMENTS. (Checks should be made payable to Concordia
Lutheran High School.)
5. Return your completed athletic physical form to the Concordia Athletic Office.
All athletes MUST have a physical exam on file BEFORE TRYING OUT for any of our sports teams. This method of receiving a physical is the easiest, most inexpensive, and the most convenient way of taking care of this obligation. If you prefer to have an exam by your family physician, we support that decision completely since he/she would know your medical history. However, the service that our doctors and athletic trainers are offering is very competent and we assure you that you will receive a thorough physical screening. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY DATE OFFERED FOR A PHYSICAL SCREENING FOR THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR. If you cannot attend on May 29 you will have to obtain your physical exam from your family doctor or a medical service site. If you have any questions, please call the Concordia Athletic Office at 969-6868.

CANstruction
Concordia Wins CANstruction People's Choice Award
On March 14, the CLHS CANstruction team built our 2014 CANstruction structure "Don't Be in DeNile About Hunger" at Glenbrook Square. We were so blessed by the help and support of the Concordia family through their generous donation of cans (1443 total) and the labor needed to move 6000 cans all around Fort Wayne. We were particularly grateful for Pastor Gudel's 5th hour Religion class for taking 2500 cans back to the mall to be used as votes for the People's Choice Award. We won! This year People's Choice also included a $1000.00 check which we are donating to the Kid's Against Hunger project at Concordia.

Concordia Presents How the West Was Dun
Concordia Lutheran High School theatre will perform How the West was Dun on Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 4 at 2:00 p.m.
Witty, hilarious and clever, Christopher Gieschen's How the West was Dun is a melodrama that spoofs many of Hollywood's Western films. Forget about your worries and laugh until your side hurts as trite Western clichés are presented with modern flare.
Slick and wealthy Richard Proudheart ("Oh, that's Rich!") must marry Polly Wanda Cracker to control the Cracker property. However, it's Polly's homely sister, Prunella, who wants to marry Richard. Meanwhile, our hero, Sheriff Wayne John, has his hands full surviving the hilarious antics of well meaning, but not too bright, Deputy Doowrong as he deals with the most wacky assemblage of villains this side of the Rio Grande.
So make plans now to see this side-splittin' sendup written and directed by published playwright, Christopher Gieschen.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for students in high school or younger.
For more information, program advertising forms, or ticket orders, call (260) 483-1102.
