Message from the Principal "Can you believe it?" At this time of year, I often get questions that start out with, "Can you believe..." and then they generally finish with something to the effect of the pace of the school year, that Spring Break has come and gone, that we have had so much snow in March, or that summer is coming. There really are so many twists and turns to a school year that each year seems to bring something different that is hard for us to believe. This year has been that for me! I hardly remember walking into my office for the first time and starting to organize things and reading official CLHS documents. It seems like so long ago that I can hardly believe it! If I couple that with all that has happened this year, my amazement increases exponentially. I mean, when I think about the tremendous successes we have had-state level accomplishments in so many activities, top level scholarships earned by our students and tremendous musical and dramatic performances-my head starts to spin! Recently, when I had the opportunity to watch our boys basketball team play in the State Final game at Banker's Life arena, I had another "Can you believe this?" moment. The culture and atmosphere of the whole event was very special, and I truly found joy in watching the community surround us with support. I had the privilege of getting a little closer to the experience with a couple of trips to Indianapolis prior to the game, and then the day of the game walking on the floor at the conclusion of the game, looking up and around at the thousands of people that were in attendance. I think I even whispered to myself..."Can you believe this?" Of course, my attention was quickly directed toward our boys and coaches and doing my best to congratulate and comfort them. I thought the day had peaked, and then entered Thomas Starks. Just minutes after the final buzzer, it was announced that Thomas had won the mental attitude award, and soon he was walking toward several reporters and a live microphone, in front of thousands of people. Many of you know what happened next-Thomas delivered a flawless award acceptance speech, witnessing his faith and displaying the class that we as a school community hope to instill in our students. For days, and now weeks, afterward, I get comments on that speech, but more than that, on the class of our community. It was very much like the response we received when our Marching Band was runner-up in the State in November and quickly displayed to all in attendance that CLHS class by first going over to congratulate the winning band. People from all over couldn't believe what they experienced. You know, it is easy to say that times like these make it "worth it" to do what we do at CLHS. I would say, though, that these are times that make it noticeable to see what we do at CLHS. You see, I truly believe that it is worth it all the time, and that when we can show outwardly what we do here just makes it noticeable. Obviously, I am ecstatic when we perform well, and when we witness well, but it only strengthens what I believe happens here often...when there aren't thousands looking upon us, but maybe only one or two. We recently celebrated another, "Can you believe it?" event...EASTER! What must it have been like to live in those days and feel what they felt? How often do we sit back and wonder what an accomplishment it was for Christ to take all of our sins to the cross, and defeat them forever by overcoming death and the devil? For us, it is truly unbelievable, it is only by the power of the Holy Spirit that we can come to faith and believe-we marvel at the awesome gift it is to us. As much as we celebrate and share the successes that we have during the school year, let's celebrate and share the ultimate victory and gift of grace we have in Christ! GO CADETS! Cadets Play at StateOur boys' basketball team represented us well at Bankers Life Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday for the 3A state championship game against the Greensburg Pirates. Although they lost in overtime 73 to 70, they had an incredible season-the best ever for our school. Thomas Starks was awarded the Class 3A Mental Attitude Award. From the School NurseAs the end of the school year approaches and our thoughts turn to graduation, here are a few suggestions for parents and graduating seniors. All seniors will be receiving a packet from the Guidance Department at graduation practice. This packet contains many important papers and especially important is your student's immunization record. These are your student's immunizations as we have them at the CLHS clinic. Please remember that these records reflect only what has been passed from every school that your child attended or updates that you have given to us. There may have been shots or immunizations that were not required by the state at a given time but should still be reflected on their record.
Keep these records in a safe place forever. They may be needed in future years for applications to jobs or schools. Moving away and having a lot of time passing since graduation may make it difficult or impossible to retrieve these records from your high school or doctor's office (doctors retire or close their practices which may cause your records to disappear altogether). Most colleges and universities require these records before starting school in the fall and it is a good idea to send a copy with your student for their own permanent file.
Speaking of permanent files, now is the time for all those graduating to gather some information and begin their own if they have not already. Yes, we are talking about keeping records that you may need in the years to come -- passports and birth certificates, baptismal certificate, your immunization records, social security card, high school transcript, important phone numbers, family history, medical history and names of medications, a photo of yourself -- all in one place that you can grab and go in case of an emergency. Start now by getting a folder and labeling it IMPORTANT. Remember to add other important papers as the years go by such as marriage certificates, copies of diplomas received, and anything else that you want to keep in a safe place.
For college-bound students, this is a good time to get a physical exam and any immunizations you may need for next year. Check with your health-care provider. Beat the summer back-to-school rush and take care of this now.
A little effort now will make things so much easier, especially if you find 12 years from now that you need that immunization record for an application that you never dreamed you would be making when you graduated from high school a long time ago!
Enjoy finishing the school year and all the fun activities that entails and a beautiful Spring walk with your teenager.

| Concordia Students and Faculty Travel to Spain
On Friday, March 29, 2013 a group of twelve CLHS students and eleven adults traveled to Spain for Spring Break. The group, led by Miss Stephanie Marks, visited some of the most beautiful attractions in Spain, including Madrid, Grenada, Seville, and Costa del Sol. Highlights of the trip were the Prado Museum, the church of Santo Tomé, the windmills of Consuegra, and the Cathedral of Seville, the third largest cathedral in the world. Students and adults can all agree though, that the most memorable experience happened while visiting the Alhambra citadel, the only remaining stronghold of the Muslim conquest in Spain.
The group had a chance to learn about the history of Muslim rule and how the Catholic monarchs finished the almost 800 year reclamation of Spain. While in the Alhambra, the group visited the palace of Charles III and our students had an opportunity to sing in the outdoor amphitheater. It was a gray, cloudy day, and while the students were singing the sun came out. Tourists from all over the world stopped to listen in silence as our Cadets sang the words, "The Lord bless you and keep you." Many people had tears in their eyes when the students finished singing.
After six amazing days of travel, the group returned safely, knowing that their memories would last a lifetime. Though they are now be stateside, each of our students brought back with them the knowledge that no matter the distance, God is always near.

St. Baldrick's Week a SuccessThe week of March 4 was St. Baldrick's Week at Concordia. Four Concordia students-Alex Fortmeyer, Allison McConnell, Katie Rehmer, and Katelyn Reinhard-worked with St. Baldrick's Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose focus is "Conquering Kids' Cancer," to kick off the events of the week. In addition to donating hair to make wigs for children who have been through chemotherapy, Concordia students collected cash donations of nearly $4,000. More than 30 students and faculty showed their support by having their hair cut or heads shaved at a school-wide assembly on March 8, the culmination of the week-long fundraising effort. |
| Health and Wellness Finale Asks Students to Consider Life Choices
On Tuesday, March 19, CLHS sponsored a motivational group called "Break the Grey" for the last Health and Wellness presentation of this school year. The group presented to the student body in a morning assembly, ate with the students in the cafeteria and then presented to parents in the early afternoon. Founder Bill Ballenger and his group discussed the effects of negative choices and asked the students if they knew another teenager who is no longer with us because of poor choices. The presentation included audience participation, a parent luncheon, music and skits.
Break the Grey is a non-profit organization defining life for America's youth through the public school system and beyond. Every day another life is lost somewhere between the clutches of indecision, uncertainty, right and wrong. Through assembly programs, internship, concert events & outreaches, Break the Grey continues to offer a message of character development, integrity and absolutes to this generation.
