Dear Friends,

The US House of Representative Ways and Means Committee has approved three bills for vote that would approve beneficial tax breaks for donations to charities. One bill in particular would be especially helpful to food banks by making a permanent tax incentive for food donations to them.  It would "amend the IRS tax code to permanently extend and expand the charitable deduction for contributions of food inventory." (HB 4719).

There are two other bills regarding IRA rollovers (HB4619) and land conservation  (HB2807) that would also encourage charitable giving.

Your voice is needed today to help ensure that generous donors will continue to receive beneficial tax breaks for their donations especially to food banks.

It is possible that the U.S. House of Representatives will vote soon on these important charitable giving provisions. These provisions have the potential to increase charitable giving and improve food donation tax incentives by making them permanent tax benefits.

The message has already been prepared for you by Independent Sector (a leadership network of non-profits, foundations and corporations working together, including Catholic Charities USA and CRS).  Click on the Take Action Now link below to send your message to the House of Representatives.

Thanks for all you do!

Vote Yes for Charity

(From Independent Sector)

"The House of Representatives will soon have an opportunity to express support for charitable giving by voting to make permanent three important giving incentives, the IRA charitable rollover and the enhanced deductions for donating food inventory and land conservation easements.

Unfortunately, these charitable tax provisions were allowed to expire on January 1 for the fourth time in recent years. On each of the three previous occasions, an entire package of tax extenders was reinstated retroactively at the end of the following year. While this may be an adequate solution for many provisions in the extenders package, these charitable provisions are different. Without an incentive in place and assured, many of the gifts the incentives were intended to promote will simply not take place.

The House is now poised to take a critical vote in the near future about whether to make these charitable provisions permanent..."

"Ohio's emergency food assistance network collectively served more than 2.3 million men, women and children in State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2012 and in the same year provided more than 160 million pounds of food and grocery items to our clients.
