Dear Friends,

A few things are happening in Ohio and around the US.

The advocacy of clemency for Arthur Tyler continues.  On March 17th, new information was released that showed serious procedural errors that led to his conviction.  We are asking everyone to write to Gov. Kasich and ask for clemency.

Monday, March 31st is Cesar Chavez Day.  On this day, we remember Chavez not just as a champion for workers' rights, but as an American hero. On this day we honor his legacy and commitment to lending a voice to the voiceless.  There is a petition that seeks to officially make this a full Day of Service. This day will serve not just to honor and remember the great work of Cesar Chavez, but to continue his central mission: that when workers are treated fairly, everybody benefits.

We are continuing to monitor opportunities for advocacy and raising our voices for the voiceless.  It is through our combined efforts that we can make a difference.

Thanks for all you do!

Sr. Kathleen Ryan, Diane Zbasnik, Pat O'Bryan, Kelly Davis, Rachel Schmidt and Ann Coplan

Clemency for Arthur Tyler

Arthur Tyler will be executed on May 28th, 2014 unless the Governor intervenes.  The co-defendant in the case, Leroy Head, confessed no less than eleven times that he killed the victim, Sander Leach.  Today Leroy Head is a free man while Mr. Tyler awaits the death penalty.

There is new information that has been released.

Arthur's website was updated on March 17, 2014 to include the egregious procedural errors that were made in this case. They include (but are not limited to):

  • During Mr. Tyler's post-conviction appeal, a sworn affidavit by Mr. Head that once again confirmed he was the murderer was inexplicably lost by the court during the proceedings.
  • During federal habeas proceedings, the court allowed Mr. Head to be deposed under oath thus providing an opportunity for Mr. Head to correct his trial testimony and tell the truth. But the prosecutor refused to grant immunity to Mr. Head and accordingly, Mr. Head asserted his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent and said nothing.

The clemency phase is Mr. Tyler's last chance to receive a fair sentence.  In a case so riddled with doubt and inconsistencies, the Governor would be more than justified to ensure the integrity of our criminal justice system by commuting Mr. Tyler's sentence.

Write Governor Kasich today and urge him to grant clemency for Arthur Tyler.

Just Issued Alert on the Farm Bill

There is still time to push for conservation & rural development funding

Each year in Congress, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees determine the amount of money for federal programs. Over the past several years, Congress cut hundreds of millions of dollars from discretionary conservation, rural development, and beginning farmer program funding.

There is still time to urge the Senate committee to reaffirm its commitment to farmers, rural communities, and the environment by maintaining funding for critical programs.

You can help: make a call today! Click here to learn more about the issues at stake and how to contact your Senators.

(If they are not on the Appropriations Committee, you can still ask them to contact their colleagues on the committee and express support for conservation funding.)

USCCB and Catholics Confront Global Poverty Need Your Help to End Human Trafficking
You can help eliminate human trafficking today by calling on your Representative to co-sponsor the FORTE Act.

Human trafficking is a horrific crime against the fundamental rights and dignity of the human person. According to a statement made by the Vatican and other religious leaders, "Modern slavery and human trafficking are crimes against humanity. The physical, economic and sexual exploitation of men, women and children condemns 30 million people to dehumanization and degradation."

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops  support this legislation. Many of the recommendations in this legislation stem from CRS' work in this area, and in particular, a project in Mexico called Jornaleros Safe.  You can help eliminate human trafficking today by calling or emailing on your Representative to co-sponsor the FORTE Act and urge the Judiciary Committee to move the bill forward as quickly as possible.

Cesar Chavez Day, March 31;

new movie coming out on March 28th

Catholic Rural Life always takes time to recognize Cesar Chavez Day, March 31. This is a time to remember his great organizing efforts for the dignity of farmworkers. At dinner time, take a moment to contemplate who picked the vegetables and fruit for your sustenance.

The big news this year is that a major new movie, Cesar Chavez,  opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, March 28. His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, saw a preview and stated: "I've always considered Chavez a prophet, preaching and exemplifying the best in Catholic social justice and American civil rights. This fine movie only confirmed that high estimate."
