Karen Leith to
Retire in February

We say goodbye to Dr. Karen Leith, who has been Director of the Catholic Commission of Summit County for 8 years.

Karen won the Bishop Cosgrove Justice Award. She is pictured here with her husband, Jim, daughter Cara and son-in-law Mario.

She is nationally recognized for her work with the Catholic Commission of Summit County.  Through her leadership, encouragement, and collaborations, she has created a diocesan-wide action and advocacy network for those who are the most vulnerable and neglected among us.  Karen is retiring as of February 7th.  We wish her many blessings on this new journey in her life.

Did You Know?

 New Director for

Summit County

Catholic Commission

Diane Zbasnik was named Director of Social Action for the Catholic Commission of Summit County for the Diocese of Cleveland in January 2014.

She moved to Cleveland from Austin, Texas where she worked as the Community Ministries Director for St. Catherine of Siena Parish.  While there she oversaw the social justice, pro-life and community development ministries.  She worked to provide volunteer opportunities for families that included making and delivering meals for homeless, facilities assistance at a housing project for single mothers and the local Catholic Worker House and support for an immigration shelter. She also began bi-annual service days that organized 300 people working at 15 different service sites.  The service day included working with the CRS Helping Hands programs where the community bagged 25,000 meals to be sent to Burkina Faso.  She also started a Community of Faith and Light for people with developmental disabilities.  It is the first recognized community in Texas.  She participated in a city wide ecumenical network to improve outreach in faith communities to people with disabilities.

Issues of Unemployment Workshop

in Summit County

Presented by Catholic Commission of Summit County

February 1, 2014
8:30am-1pm
St. Paul's Parish, Room 111
1580 Brown St.,
Akron, 44301

The Economic Justice Committee of the Catholic Commission of Summit County is conducting a workshop on employment issues. Parish volunteers and staff working with the chronically unemployed are invited to a morning workshop that will cover the obstacles to employment along with resources available in the community. St. Paul Parish, Akron, is hosting on Saturday, February 1, from 8:30 AM to noon. Panelists will include specialists on reentry issues, training issues and lack of skills. Initiating job clubs, finding training programs and mentoring will be discussed.

Attendees will be receiving a new manual the committee has developed, thanks to a CCHD local grant, that not only provides instructions to help someone with no or limited skills log into websites that help but also lists some important ones to visit for help. Included in the manual are many helpful hints about applying on line, job searches, and places to search that always have entry level jobs.

This is a free workshop, but we need an email RSVP to Ann Coplan.

Earned Income Tax Credit

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is now accepting applications for the 2014 Local Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) grants including the Local Youth and Young Adult Grant and the Local Community Grant.

 Medicaid Expansion

Through the great advocacy efforts across the state, including the leadership of the Catholic Conference of Ohio, Medicaid has been expanded in Ohio for Adults with income up to 138 percent of poverty level! This translates to $15,856 for a single adult or $32,499 for a family of four. Benefits started January 1st, but in order to receive those benefits eligible Ohioans need to apply for Medicaid through the state's website at  www.Benefits.Ohio.gov .

Anyone who may have enrolled through the federal healthcare website will need to reapply through the state site because of a current glitch in the system which will not allow the state and federal websites to communicate with each other. It is estimated that more than 60,000 Ohioans may have applied through the federal site and will be affected by this issue.

To find out if someone is eligible for Medicaid benefits, they should complete an application online at Benefits.Ohio.Gov.  If they cannot complete an application online they can go to their local JFS office and complete an application with a case worker there or call the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline at (800) 324-8680.

If an individual does not qualify for Medicaid they may still qualify for help paying for insurance on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. For more information on the federal Health Insurance Marketplace visit HealthCare.gov or call the federal hotline at (800) 318-2596.

Please share this information widely with your networks. We need your help to let people who are eligible for Medicaid know that they must apply at www.Benefits.Ohio.gov

CRS Rice Bowl:

Putting our Faith into Action

Jewish Community Once Again Honors CCCA

The Global Jewish Advocacy (AJC) is a organization with a history of over 100 years of working towards building a safer, more just world. For 50 years they have been recognizing organizations that show initiative and leadership in advancing intergroup understanding and respect in our diverse Cleveland population.

The Isaiah Award is a 20 inch statuette or the Hebrew prophet, Isaiah, holding a broken sword and standing with a plowshare. It symbolizes the turning of force and violence into love and compassion. In 1978, the Commission on Catholic Community Action (CCCA) was given this award for its work for peace with justice within the Diocese of Cleveland.

On January, 23rd, as part of AJC's 50th year celebration of the giving of this award, the CCCA will again be recognized for its continued work in building bridges to help improve community relations. Sr. Kathleen Ryan, SND, Director of the Diocesan Social Action Office will be the guest of the Jewish Community at a special breakfast at the City Club to honor past recipients of the Isaiah Award. The breakfast will celebrate the combined work and continued commitment of the Diocese of Cleveland and the Jewish Community of Cleveland to work together to help create a community in which all people are accorded respect, dignity and justice.

Parishes Bring Gifts and Love to Catholic Charities Early Learning Centers for Thanksgiving and Christmas

The Diocesan Social Action Commissions worked with the Catholic Charities Early Learning Centers to support the Thanksgiving and Christmas Outreach Efforts. During the fall Parish Networking Meetings, parish social concerns committee members learned first hand about the work of the Catholic Charities Early Learning and Family Centers. Through the outstanding generosity of the parishes and commissions, literally hundreds of families were helped during the holidays.

A huge thank to you Karen Knaus, the 8th grade teacher at Gesu and the entire school community for more that 25 gigantic boxes full of food for the centers. To St. John Neumann for taking more than 30 families and providing full Thanksgiving meals. Gesu and St. John Neumann came back at Christmas with literally hundreds of gifts for the children.

St. Paschal Baylon provided Santa Claus and the elves to distribute gifts and a parishioner from St. Paschal provided over 200 brand new toys. Holy Spirit Parish in Avon Lake, St. Francis of Assisi, Gates Mills, St. Basil in Brecksville gave beautiful toys and clothes and gift cards for groceries. St. Basil Parish also provided St. Martin de Porres Family Center with hundreds of gifts.

Even Catholic Charities system Directors also made donations of money and toys. Karen Leith, Director of the Catholic Commission of Summit County, gave a $300 dollar donation to the work of the centers and widely publicized the needs.

We could never do what we do without our parishes and the outstanding response we get whenever we present our work and the needs of the work. Thank you one and all.

Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice Keep Active

The faculty and students involved in Catholic Students for Peace and Justice never take a breath! They continue to work for change on every level.

On December 12 - 15, students from Lake Catholic, St. Joseph Academy, St. Ignatius, Beaumont and Padua with their teachers met at Our Lady of the Lakes Retreat House in Hinckley to participate in an experience to inspire, energize and cultivate student leaders. This time together reaffirmed the reality that there is a strong presence of committed young people in our schools!! The retreat was designed to form a leadership team for CSPJ in order to plan a mini gathering of all the high schools in the diocese to discuss and plan for a major summit next school year. The students who made the retreat will be the team leaders for the next months of planning.

St. Joseph Academy will host the mini-summit for about 60 students and teachers on the issue of human trafficking and other areas that affect human dignity. Taking a lead from Pope Francis' call for a commitment to end human trafficking, the students will participate in workshops, hear speakers and view films about this issue with the intent to plan for future gatherings that could lead to action.

CSJP is also planning the annual CSPJ trip to Washington, DC for the March for Life which will begin on the evening of Tuesday, Jan 21st with a prayer service at St. Ignatius followed by the bus trip to DC to participate in the March for Life. There are over 160 students already committed to this event. This is the second large gathering of the year to speak out and up for Respect for Life. A similar rally was sponsored by CSPJ in the fall.
