It's Springtime and the programs and events are popping up like the tulips and daffodils!One recent event in particular was the Somers Library Foundation luncheon at the lovely GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford Hills as covered by the April 25 edition of The Somers Record.Thanks to the hard work and planning by the members of the Foundation Board, proceeds from the lunch, raffle, and silent auction will be put toward funding a special project to enhance the library.Stay tuned!The library trustees, staff, and I are very grateful for the tremendous support from the Library Foundation, from the Friends and from the community.All funds will be used to make your library a better learning center that gives back to you in many ways.  Thank you!

Try Them Out - iPads

Thanks to the generous funding from the Friends of the Library, we iPad have new 2 iPads in the library that you can "test drive." One is set up with children's apps in the Jean Reidy Children's Room and the other is near the puzzle table in adult reference.

May 4 at 2:00pm. God of Carnage. The Friends of the Somers Library is sponsoring a free performance of the M&M production, God of Carnage. Written by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, and winner of the 2009 Tony Award. It is a story of a parents' meeting gone awry to comic and tragic effect.

   

May 7 at 7:00pm Sustainability Series - Complete Streets/Safe Paths - How we are transforming Somers streets/paths.  Making the streets of Somers easier and safer for biking/walking.   Discussion leader: Rick Warren.

  

May 18 at 11:00am. Cooking With Garbanzo Beans & Lentil Sprouts. Learn how easy it is to grow chick peas and lentil sprouts in your own kitchen, and discover some great recipes utilizing these ingredients. Presented by Norma Chang.  Sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library.

May 19 at 2:00pm. Concert by Too Human. The Friends of the Somers Library is sponsoring a free performance by TOO HUMAN. Ellen and Roger of Too Human cover jazz standards from the American Songbook, but with a fresh interpretation that brings new life to those classic songs. Sweet harmonies and unusual arrangements are the musical elements that frame their performance. 
    

May 20 at 6:00pm. The Good Old Days...Or Were They?   Howard D. Hellman, author of CROWN THY GOOD, will present an interactive discussion of what life in mid-nineteenth century New York was like. His historical novel counterpoints life in Manhattan with that of the vanished hamlet, Doodletown, that existed in the Hudson River Highlands in those years.

  

May 30 at 6:30pm. Who Pays for Home Health Care? Learn what Medicare pays for after a hospital stay, and your costs when Medicare payments stop. Presented by the Medicare Rights Center.

  

Mondays 6/3, 6/10, 6/24, 7/1 at 6:00 PMBreathing Techniques & Meditation to Reduce Stress (four part seminar)  Internationally acclaimed seminar based on innovative breathing techniques that can reduce stress and heighten mental clarity and awareness. The techniques and processes introduced during the seminar are easy to learn and practice, improving human performance in the workplace, creating a greater sense of commitment and team unity, improved relationships, and enhancing overall quality of life. This program is offered through Art of Living Foundation and is presented by Manjula Khanna. Suggested donation of $20 to the Friends of Somers Library. June 4 at 7:00pm Sustainability Series - Energize Somers is a community-based energy efficiency program that provides free energy assessments, optional low cost financing, and tools/support to assist you at no cost. Potential savings can range from 10-30% annually. Discussion leader: Frank Maricic. No registration necessary.

  

June 6 at 6:00pm. Get LinkedIn to Your Job Search. Overcome your reluctance or fear to use LinkedIn, a powerful job search and networking tool. Learn about its features and how to get started. Find out what to put in an online profile and how to market yourself. Presented by WEBS Career & Educational Counseling Service.  

  

June 8 at 11:00pm. Organizing for Stress. Dealing with stress is difficult enough. Learn some tactics to help you organize your life and home in order to help reduce stress. Presented by Andrea Deinstadt. 

 

June 9 at 2pm. Concert featuring The Hudson Bells. The Hudson Bells is a women's choral group, singing three and four-part harmony, both a cappella and with piano accompaniment. Their wide-ranging repertoire includes American songbook standards, jazz classics, Broadway favorites and contemporary pop tunes. The group draws singers from the lower Hudson River Valley towns. Their musical director is Kinny Landrum. Sponsored by The Friends of Somers Library.

  

June 13 at 6:30pm. Speak Up for Yourself.  Learn how to recognize 'ageism', get your doctor to listen to you and speak 'plain English', and when you should get a second opinion. Presented by the Medicare Rights Center.    

  

June 24 9-3. AARP Defensive Driving. $17 fee for AARP members (please put your membership number on your check), $19 fee for non-AARP members. Pre-payment is required. Refunds will not be given if you fail to attend, or cancel the day of class. Bring a valid driver's license, bag lunch, beverage, and pen. No online registration for this event. Space is limited, so register early.   

    

June 25 at 7:00pm Sustainability Series-Our Town, Our Planet.  Make a Difference - Learn about various sustainable energy methods such as solar electric, solar thermal for hot water, geothermal for heat and cooling, passive solar, alternative fuels, and more. Somers is participating in a Solarize program which will make solar affordable through community participation. Discussion leader: Jerry Robock. No registration necessary.

  

July 8 at 6:30pm. Culinary and Kitchen Herbs for the Garden. Learn which herbs can enhance your food and garden, and how to creatively use them in your kitchen. Presented by Carol Greenwalk, Cornell Cooperative Extension. Sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library.

   

July 9 at 7:00pm Sustainability Series - Our Land, Water, Air - how a sustainable community manages and conserves the planet's resources for current and future generations and how these techniques can be adopted in Somers. July 11 at 6:30pm. Building a Health Care Team. Learn why a team can help coordinate your health; who to pick and what they can do when help is needed. Learn about the health care proxy, and other advanced directives. Presented by the Medicare Rights Center.

September 19 at 6:30pm. The Stress Breakthrough Experience.  Learn simple ways to radically reduce stress and rejuvenate every aspect of your life. Presented by Pat Min Cohen. 

  

October 5 at 1:00pm. Podium Power: A Public Speaking Workshop with Dana Rubin. Communications consultant Dana Rubin will lead an 3-hour, interactive workshop designed to help individuals improve their presentation skills before audiences of any size. Sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library.

Regina Gelfer has been working as an artist, designer and illustrator since high school. In 1988, she received her BFA from SUNY Purchase with a major in graphic design. She worked for Archie Comic Publications, where she first learned cartooning, primarily penciling from master artists. Through the years she has created graphic designs and illustrations for companies such as Marvel Comics, PepsiCo, MTV, AVAYA and various educational publications. Regina's first love has always been painting. In addition, Regina published two children's books: "That Sounds Like Fun," which she illustrated and designed and the "The Kiss Box," a picture book. If traveling throughout Putnam County, you may see one of her hand painted trash cans (over 10 in all) which she was commissioned to paint for a program called "Keep Putnam Beautiful". To see a sampling of Regina's varied works, please go to her website at www.gelfergraphics.com. There will be an artist reception at the Somers Library on Saturday, May 11th from 11-12:30.

Saturday, May 18 at 3:00- Kite Making!  Join us to make your own kite and then fly it outside (weather permitting). Register.
 
►Save the Date! Our Summer Reading Kick-Off is Friday, June 21 at 1:00. 
 
First Grade classes from Primrose Elementary School will come to the library for their annual Tour & Library Card on May 28, 29, 30.  (Rain dates June 3, 4, 6, 7).

 

 Storytime  

 

Storytime for Babies: ages 6 months to 2 years:
Every Tuesday at 10:30 or 11:30 am. No registration is necessary but you must have a Somers Library Card. See the Storytime schedule here. 
 
Storytime for Toddlers: ages 2 and 3  years: Thursday or Friday at 10:30.  No registration is necessary but you must have a Somers Library Card. See the Storytime schedule here. 
 
Storytime for Preschoolers: ages 4 and 5:  This program includes a craft. No snacks.  Parents or caregivers must stay in the Library but do not attend the program. See the schedule and register here. 
Book Club
Book Clubs for Grade K, 1 and 2:  Children's librarian Vicki DiSanto meets with the children each week in the Library's program room from 3:30 to 4:15 in 6 week sessions. A snack is served so please let us know if there are restrictions, or plan to bring your own. Parents and caregivers must be in the building but do not attend the program.  See the schedule and register here.  

  

Book Clubs for grades 3, 4, or 5 meet monthly on Thursday afternoons from 3:45 to 4:45 pm. Children take home a library book to read and return at the next month's meeting so a library card is essential. A snack is served so please let us know if there are restrictions, or plan to bring your own. Bus transportation is available from SIS, Bus N.  See the schedule and register here.

 ►Somers High School senior Sarah Barr was recognized with Girl Scout's higest honor. Sarah received her Gold Award at a special ceremony on March 9. Sarah worked with Children's Librarian Vicki DiSanto and developed a book club for struggling readers which she implemented during the 2012 Summer Reading Program at the Somers Library.

College Application Essay: Join us on Saturday, May 11th from 1pm - 2pm to learn about the process of writing a great college application essay. Did you know that when GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and extracurricular activities are similar college admission officers look to the application essay as the key differentiator? Learn how to make your essay stand out.  Registration is required and space is limited.
 
Babysitting Class: Join us on Saturday, June 1st from 10:30am - 2:30pm to learn the ins and outs of babysitting. This is a free class for students in 5th grade and up. Registration is required and space is limited.

►Middle School Book Club: Join us to discuss books, play games, and hang out. We meet every Tuesday from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. This club is open to all middle school students throughout the school year.  No registration required. Dates: 5/7, 5/14, 5/21, & 5/28.

 ►Teen Gaming Club: Join us to play games every OTHER Friday from 3pm to 4:30pm. Play video games (PS3 & Wii), card games, board games, or any other type of game you want. This club is open to both Middle and High School students.  No registration required. Dates: 5/10
& 5/24.

►Anime Club: Join us to watch and discuss Japanese Anime every OTHER Monday from 3pm to 4pm. This club is
open to high school students throughout the school year.  No registration required. Date: 5/13.

►Teen Advisory Group: Help volunteer at the Somers Library. We are looking for middle and high school students who are interested in developing and implementing programs/events, creating book displays, enhancing the library's website, and anything else we can think of. All members will receive community service hours. We meet once a month on a Monday from 6pm to7pm. Registration is required. Date: 5/13.
