We always like to brag, and this month, we are happy to report that thanks to the efforts of our adult Reference Librarian Val Herman, Somers Library has more followers on its 140+ Pinterest boards than New York Public Library. Our boards have 15,000+ followers! We even received a call from the Southern Maryland Library System asking for our secret. The answer is that our staff  continually strives to set new goals to surprise you. Check out the library's boards on Pinterest...it's a great place to get ideas for your next book club title, or to look for some new books to read. You'll see that our boards reflect a wide variety of reading interests for adults, teens and children. There are award winners, mysteries, staff picks and more!! If you haven't already used the social media tool Pinterest, check it out at http://pinterest.com/somerslibrary. If you have any questions, just ask!

30-Year Anniversary Celebration of "The Library in the Park"

 

In 1982, the library moved from the former cobbler's house on route 100 to Reis Park to the newly constructed 6,000 square foot library in Reis Park. In 1993 two pods, the program room and the reading room, were added to the main library, more than doubling its size. In 2012 we had the honor of celebrating our thirtieth anniversary of operating the library in the park with a two-week-long series of special programs and events, at the beginning of April, timed to coincide with National Library Week. The celebration terminated with a book sale on April 14, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, along with a number of programs including a presentation on the history of the Library, a harp/horn concert, children's games, a children's stage performance, clowns, face painting and a 30th anniversary cake tasting.

Unstoppable Women. March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 at 10:30am. If you could make one change in your life that you would feel would give you the greatest relief, satisfaction or invigoration if you accomplished it...what would that be? Join us on Fridays in March for a series of discussions based on the book. Space is limited, so register early!

Writers Workshop. March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 at 1pm. This workshop will help those interested in writing a lengthy piece, short story, memoir, feature for local newspaper, or even a blog. Bring your ideas, pen and paper (or laptop) so that within a few short weeks you will have developed the strategies to become a lifelong writer. People of all skill levels are welcome. Presented by Linda Spear.

March 11 at 6:30pmEnergy Efficiency and Energy Alternatives for Your Home. A panel of area experts will speak about energy efficiency and alternative energy for your home in 2013; what works in our area; what has realistic payback; what state and federal incentives exist to help pay for it; and how to get the right evaluation. Presented by the Somers Energy and Environment Committee and Energize NY. 

   

March 14 at 6:30pm. Selling the Family Home: Starting the Conversation. Deciding when to sell the family home is one of the most challenging conversations adult children can have with their parents. Join us for an informative, encouraging presentation addressing what you need to know to have a meaningful, successful conversation. Presented by Tracy Christen Reimann.

 

March 21 at 6:00pm. Staying Safe Behind the Wheel.

This clinic will not only consist of valuable safety tips but will also feature tips on handling emergencies. Staying safe behind the vehicle incorporates a balance between following the rules of the road and having a well maintained, safe vehicle. Presented by Joe Marconi of Osceola Garage.

 

April 6 at 1:00pm. How to Sell on Ebay for Beginners. Whether you are starting a business or you just want to make some extra cash, learn how to sell on Ebay from an expert seller in this interactive presentation. Presented by Susan Longo.  

 

April 13 at 11:00am. Meet the Author: Jo Pitkin. Award winning poet and Somers native Jo Pitkin will read from and discuss her new book "Cradle of the American Circus: Poems from Somers, New York."  A.W. Stencell, past president of the Circus Historical Society wrote: "Pitkin's poems about early American menagerie and circus showmen from in and around Somers, New York, is a wonderful read... With great effort and investment these showmen brought the American public exotic wonders no American at the time had a chance to see. As a showman, circus owner, animal presenter and author, I loved Jo's work. You will too!"

 

April 13 at 2:00pm. What Would You Love in 2013? An architect needs to know what a house will look like before the builder can build it. Be the architect of your life for 2013. Come play and create a blueprint for your year. Get energized, and let us help you generate your life energy to kick into gear for your new year. 

 

April 15 from 9:00am - 3:00pm. AARP Defensive Driving Course. $17 fee for AARP members, $19 fee for non AARP members (write your membership number on check.) Refunds will not be given if you fail to attend, or if you cancel the day of class. Bring a valid driver's license, bag lunch, beverage, and a pen. Space is limited, so register early. April 17 from 11:30am-. Somers Library Foundation Spring Bridge and Games Luncheon at GlenArbor Golf Club, Bedford Hills. April 22 at 6:00pm. Meet the Author: Nicholas DiGiovanni. Nicholas DiGiovanni will read selections from his novel RIP, a modern day parody of Washington Irving's classic "Rip Van Winkle." Enjoy this modern-day retelling of Irving's classic as Rip's wife's cause is taken up by a group of feminists who do battle with Rip and his friends as they try to infiltrate their men-only bastion of beer-drinking and belches.  

 

►May 18 at 11:00am.Cooking With Garbanzo Beans & Lentil Sprouts. Learn how easy it is to grow chickpeas and lentil sprouts in your own kitchen, and discover some great recipes utilizing these ingredients. Presented by Norma Chang.  

  

May 20 at 6:00pm. The Good Old Days...Or Were They?

Howard D. Hellman, author of CROWN THY GOOD, will present an interactive discussion of what life in mid-nineteenth century New York was like. His historical novel counterpoints life in Manhattan with that of the vanished hamlet, Doodletown, that existed in the Hudson River Highlands in those years.

 The Friends of the Somers Library has kicked off the 2013 annual membership drive. Annual membership starts at $20 and up. If you haven't already joined or renewed with your tax-deductible contribution, please consider it. Corporate matching gifts are also welcome. The Friends group brings you recreational, educational, cultural music and art programs, supplemental materials, and so MUCH MORE! Forms and envelopes are available in the library. Thank you!

Storytime  
Storytime for Babies: ages 6 months to 2 years:
Every Tuesday at 10:30 or 11:30 am. No registration is necessary but you must have a Somers Library Card. See the Storytime schedule here. 
Storytime for Toddlers: ages 2 and 3  years: Thursday or Friday at 10:30.  No registration is necessary but you must have a Somers Library Card. See the Storytime schedule here. 
Storytime for Preschoolers: ages 4 and 5:  This program includes a craft. No snacks.  Parents or caregivers must stay in the Library but do not attend the program. See the schedule and register here. 
Book Club
Book Clubs for Grade K, 1 and 2:  Children's librarian Vicki DiSanto meets with the children each week in the Library's program room from 3:30 to 4:15 in 6 week sessions. A snack is served so please let us know if there are restrictions, or plan to bring your own. Parents and caregivers must be in the building but do not attend the program.  See the schedule and register here.  
Book Clubs for grades 3, 4, or 5 meet monthly on Thursday afternoons from 3:45 to 4:45 pm. Children take home a library book to read and return at the next month's meeting so a library card is essential. A snack is served so please let us know if there are restrictions, or plan to bring your own. Bus transportation is available from SIS, Bus N.  See the schedule and register here.

Free SAT Practice Exam: Join us on Saturday, February 9th from 11am - 3pm for a free SAT practice exam. This is for High School students and all participants must bring pencils and a calculator. Registration is required and space is limited.

Free ACT Practice Exam: Join us on Saturday, March 9th from 11am - 3pm for a free ACT practice exam. This is for High School students and all participants must bring pencils and a calculator. Registration is required and space is limited.

Teens
►Middle School Book Club: Join us to discuss books, play games, and hang out. We meet every Tuesday from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. This club is open to all middle school students throughout the school year.  No registration required. Dates: 2/5, 2/12, & 2/26.

 ►Teen Gaming Club: Join us to play games every OTHER Friday from 3pm to 4:30pm. Play video games (PS3 & Wii), card games, board games, or any other type of game you want. This club is open to both Middle and High School students.  No registration required. Dates: 2/1 & 2/15.


►Anime Club: Join us to watch and discuss Japanese Anime every OTHER Monday from 3pm to 4pm. This club is
open to high school students throughout the school year.  No registration required. Date: 2/4.

►Teen Advisory Group: Help volunteer at the Somers Library.
We are looking for middle and high school students who are interested in developing and implementing programs/events, creating book displays, enhancing the library's website, and anything else we can think of. All members will receive community service hours. We meet once a month on a Monday from 6pm to7pm. Registration is required. Date: 2/4.
