SeaPerch:  The 8th Grade STEM Academy's 1st Project

One of the components of a successful STEM program is cross-functional projects and competitions.  The 8th Grade STEM Academy's teachers have identified several projects for the students to work on over the course of the year.  To kick off the school year, the students participated in the SeaPerch program (SeaPerch.org).  SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that teaches students basic engineering and science and tool safety and technical procedures.  To learn more about this exciting program, please watch this short video:

On Thursday, September 3rd, the 8th Grade STEM Academy began their SeaPerch Competition.  The students were placed in 32 teams with approximately 4 kids in each group.   Throughout the day, each of these groups rotated 8 groups at a time to four different stations.  There were two simultaneous pool competitions monitored by Mr. Constant and Mr. Daniell taking place in the courtyard. Meanwhile, the other half of the kids were either in Mrs. Hollander's "holding room" or delivering their SeaPerch presentations to Ms. Bussert and Ms.Moss in the Media Center.

The kids all seemed fairly nervous at first but quickly loosened up and had a good time.  Mr. Constant organized the competition using brackets similar to the NCAA Men's College basketball tournament.   All 32 teams competed on Thursday but only the  "Sweet 16" moved on to the rounds on Friday.   Everyone who moved on to Friday kept their presentation score from Thursday and only competed in the two pool courses.  Sweet 16 quickly turned into an Elite 8, then a Final 4 with the SEAFtey Goggles rising to the top!   Apparently, Mr. Constant is a stickler for wearing "safety goggles" so the winning team derived their name from combining SEAPerch with Safety.

CONGRATS TO THE SEAFtey Goggles: Henry Gies, Lindsay Southard, Nicole Gresham and Madison Pankey!   They competed at Georgia Tech on September 10th and were cheered on by Mr. Constant, Mr. Shrader, Mr. Heptinstall and the three runner up teams!
