A Note from Our PCMS School Nurses

As your new PCMS school nurses, we would like to send out a few clinic reminders:

1. We staff the clinic daily 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Need to get in touch with us? Please call 678-676-7702 or email us at pcmsnurse@gmail.com

2. We cannot give any medication to students without your written permission on file and the medicine in original packaging. Need a form? Email us and we will send it to you.

3. If your student has a temperature of 100 degrees F or greater, they need to go home. Students should not return to school until they have been fever free (without fever reducing medication) for 24 hours.

4. We see a LOT of coughing this time of year. Please remind your student to "vampire" cough or cough into their elbow. This reduces the amount of germs spread through the air and on their hands.

5. Finally, we always encourage good hand washing with a minimum 20 second lather! It is still the number one way to minimize germ transmission.

Thank you,
Sarah Borcherding, RN
Annemarie Madden, RN

Electronic Devices

Parents, we are asking for your help with the use of cell phones in the building. We are hav ing numerous phones taken up throughout the week. Students have been given the rules about cell phones, headphones, tablets and ipads. We are finding that too many of our students are checking their electronic devices for social media throughout the day. Once students enter the building they must put away their devices. If a student is given permission to use their device for instructional purposes in the classroom, then before leaving that classroom they should put it away. The protocol for each offense is listed below. We thank you for your assistance.

*      1st Offense - Teachers turn in the phones and other devices to Ms. King in the attendance office. The item must be logged by the teacher. The item is labeled with the student's name, the teachers name and the date of confiscation. Students may pick up their item at the end of the day (3:50 PM) but never during class time. At the end of the day all items will be given to Ms. Sellers in the main office. Items not picked up by 4:10 will be held until the following morning.

*       2nd Offense - Teachers turn in the phones and other devices to Ms. King in the attendance office. The item must be logged by the teacher. The item is labeled with the student's name, the teachers name and the date of confiscation. The item will be held until a parent or guardian is available to pick it up. At the end of the day (3:50 PM), all items will be given to Ms. Sellers in the main office. Items not picked up by4:10, will be held until the following morning.

*       3rd Offense - Teachers turn in the phones and other devices to Ms. King in the attendance office. The item must be logged by the teacher. The item is labeled with the student's name, the teacher's name and the date of confiscation. Once the item is logged for the third time Ms. King will notify the grade level AP and the AP will submit a referral for in-school suspension. At this point, all contact will be between the AP and the parent.

Pick-Up Artwork in Art Room

All 7th graders who submitted artwork for the 8th grade year-long class need to come to the Art Room to pick up their work this week.

Invitation to 6th Graders for World Languages

The Counseling Office is now in the process of inviting 6th grade students to let us know their preference for World Language classes for next year. Students who take a World Language in both 7th and 8th grades earn 1 Carnegie Unit for high school.

The criteria for an invitation are a B or better in Language Arts on the 1st semester Report Card AND a score of 55% or higher on the STAR Reading testing taken in January, 2015. The World Language letters were sent home to eligible students on Wednesday, Feb. 4th.

Please read the letter carefully. On the front of the letter, there are two places where parents must put their initials that they read and understood the statements. On the back of the letter, we ask for the child's 1st and 2nd choice of language, and the parent signature. If no second choice language is listed, ELT will be entered as the 2nd choice.

World Language letters must be returned to the Counseling Office by Tuesday, Feb. 10th.  Do NOT return the letter to a teacher: all letters must be returned directly to the Counseling Office. Any letters received after Feb 10 will be placed on a waiting list for available seats.

In order for students to be placed in the World Language class next year, they must maintain the grade of B or better in Language Arts for 2nd semester, and must test at 55% on the STAR Reading in April, 2015.

IMPORTANT Update!  Latin Now Available as World Language Option

Students invited to choose a World Language for 7th grade now have the option to choose Latin. Latin would be offered as a 2-year language program similar to the way we have always offered Spanish, French and German.

** If your child has already handed in their World Language letter, but now wants Latin as their 1st or 2nd choice, please email Denise_M_Poh@dekalbschoolsga.org.

If you child has not yet handed in their World Language letter and wants Latin as their 1st or 2nd choice, please write-in "Latin" on the appropriate line.

We are excited to expand our 7th grade language choices for students.

Rising 6th Grade Parents

PCMS invites parents of 5th graders to learn more about PCMS and information to prepare your rising 6th grader for middle school.

The last informational coffee will be on Sunday, February 8 at 2:00 pm in the cafeteria. The session will last 1 hour and will be followed by a school tour.
You will receive information about the summer bridge program offered to rising 6th graders to help with the transition to PCMS, typical 6th grade schedules, band/orchestra/choral offerings, daily PE, and the accelerated math program.  You will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the school's principal and teachers.

PCMS Spirit Wear will be available for purchase in the school store on February 8 from 3:00-4:00pm. Cash or check only.

Tours of PCMS are offered to parents by appointment if you are not able to attend one of the coffees.

Faculty Email Addresses

DeKalb County School District has transitioned to a new email address system.  We are no longer using FirstClass.  We are now using Microsoft Outlook.  Although FirstClass is supposed to continue "transferring all emails" to our new domain, it is best for you to actually use our domain when you are emailing us.

The name part of the email address is the same -

(First Name_MI_Last Name) but the domain is now @dekalbschoolsga.org

Although it is our expectation to respond promptly to emails, we are experiencing problems with the new email system.  We have received a lot of complaints that multiple emails have been sent, and that teachers, counselors, and administrators are not responding to them.  If you do not hear back from a staff member within two business days (48 hours) from an email you sent, please follow up with a phone call.  Thank you.
