PSAT

The PSAT will be given on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 to 8th graders who opt to take the test. The test is offered for practice. It is NOT required, but is highly recommended for students who are college-bound. The test will be given here at Peachtree during the regular school day. Many students have already paid for the PSAT on Registration Day. If your
child is "paid," they received the PSAT Student Handbook through their 5th period teacher on Thursday, August 28th.

Ms. Poh began taking additional payments for the PSAT on Wednesday, September 3 and will do so every morning in September from 8:30 until 8:50. The fee is $17, exact change... cash only. Fee waivers are available for students with financial need. Contact Ms. Poh if a fee waiver is needed.

Payments and waiver requests will be accepted throughout the month of September in Ms. Poh's office in the counseling area.  PSAT payments may NOT be dropped off at the Main Office. The Counseling Office will NOT be responsible for any cash placed in mailboxes. Payments for the PSAT are taken by Ms. Poh in the Counseling Office every morning in September from 8:30-8:50. Only then will a receipt and a PSAT Student Handbook be given.

Free digital textbooks available through the Georgia Department of Education

As the 2014-2015 academic year begins, teachers, school leaders, parents and students should be aware that they can access free, interactive digital textbooks through the Georgia Department of Education's website.

"As we implement the new standards, we know teachers and parents need high-quality resources," State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge said. "We developed these textbooks and other resources for middle and high school virtual school courses, and the students who have used them have been very successful. Much of their success can be attributed to these exceptional resources in the hands of our teachers."

The textbooks, which can be accessed by visiting http://www.gavirtuallearning.org/Resources  are currently available for middle and high school courses. They cover an array of content areas in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, CTAE Electives, and several World Languages (Spanish, German, French, Latin, Chinese and Japanese).

Textbooks available range from courses such as Coordinate Algebra, Analytic Geometry, and Biology to electives such as Web Design, Agriculture, and Healthcare Science.

Many of the textbooks feature supplemental or interactive content, including study guides, discussion questions, games, audio recordings, and quizzes. When learning about function families in a Coordinate Algebra textbook, students can hover over vocabulary words to view their definitions. In a Fundamentals of Web Design CTAE course, students can take interactive quizzes as they learn HTML.

These resources are aligned to the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and are free for use by schools, districts, or individuals. To access the textbooks and a list of subjects available, visit www.gavirtuallearning.org/Resources, then visit the "click here" link under the "shared" heading. Visit www.gavirtuallearning.org to access more online-learning resources from the Georgia Department of Education.

Even if you were included in last year's directory, you still need to fill out the online form to be included in this year's directory.  All online entries must be submitted by September 8th to be included in the directory.

Note that if you do not want your student's information included in the directory, please be sure to check the "opt out" button on the form.  If you have already filled out the form, and do not recall whether you opted out, please feel free to e-mail me directly at nnelson118@gmail.com, to confirm that you do not want your student's information in the directory.

Thank you for your help in ensuring the accuracy of our data.  As in the past, a hard copy of the directory will be sent home during the first semester to those families who ordered the directory at PCMS registration via payment of the membership dues.

For anyone wanting volunteer hours, we will be looking for help sometime towards late September / early October to sort and label directories prior to distribution.  Your help would be much appreciated!  Please e-mail me, Nicole Nelson, at nnelson118@gmail.com or Kirstin Ralston-Coley, at keralston@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering.
