In order to determine how many inclement weather days to make-up, Superintendent Thurmond and members of the senior team established priorities, recommended calendar modifications to achieve them, and identified the instructional impacts. The priorities, modifications, and instructional impacts are as follows:

Priorities

* To recoup and maximize the number of instructional days prior to the

administration of the Criterion Reference Competency Tests (CRCT) and

   End of Course Tests (EOCTs)

* To recoup and maximize the number of days for remediation prior to

the second administration of the CRCT and EOCT

* To maximize student growth and achievement through targeted

professional learning for teachers, department heads, and

   administrators

Calendar Modifications to Achieve Priorities

* Adjust the CRCT testing window by one week to allow for five

additional instructional days prior to the administration of the CRCT

   - April 22 - May 1, 2014

* Maintain EOCT test window - May 5-12, 2014

* Change the CRCT re-test window to recoup remediation days prior to

   the CRCT re-assessment - May 20-22, 2014

* Recoup three instructional days to the calendar - May 21-23, 2014

* Change the last day of school for all students (PreK-12) - May 23,

   2014

* Change Post-planning Day for second semester (PreK-12) - May 27, 2014

* Change Professional Learning Day for all staff (PreK-12) - May 28,

   2014

* Change the three remaining furlough/work reduction days for 10 and

   11 month employees - May 29 - June 2, 2014

Instructional Impacts

* Recoup and maximize five instructional days prior to the

   administration of the CRCT

* Add three days to the calendar to recoup instructional time

* Provide continued support and resources for DeKalb's focus on

growth and achievement for teachers, department heads, and

administrators through targeted high quality professional learning

* Add Saturday, March 15, 2014, as an extra professional learning

opportunity for teachers and department heads to focus on the Growth

   and Achievement Model (optional)

* Utilize the 12 instructional days after the first CRCT

   administration for remediation

* Utilize four instructional days for targeted remediation upon

receipt of test results for all elementary and middle schools before

the CRCT re-test administration on May 20-22, 2014

* Provide targeted Parental and Family Engagement Workshops to support

the home-school connection to improve growth and academic achievement

At the March 3, 2014 meeting, the DeKalb County Board of Education approved the modifications to the 2013-2014 school calendar. The amended calendar is attached.

Thank you for your continued support.

Parent Teacher Charter Council Nominating Committee

PCMS's Parent Teacher Charter Council is looking for nominees and a Nominating Committee for the 2014-2015 school year.

During the month of March, the Nominating Committee will choose candidates to serve on the PTCC as parent representatives. This is a group of parents who are charged with the task of finding three individuals to serve and proposing a slate for the 2014-2015 PTCC parent representatives.  You can suggest someone to serve on the Nominating Committee or you can volunteer yourself to serve.  Please take time and consider serving or nominating another parent to serve on this very important committee.

If you would like to serve on the PTCC, please also submit your name at this time. We would like representatives from all feeder schools who are interested in serving a two-year term.  One person shall be interested in serving as the Chairman for their second year as well as two other action team chairs.

Please contact Andrea Levy anareea@aol.com if you are interested in serving on the Nominating Committee or you are interested in serving as an action team chair on the PTCC during the next two school years.

Into the Woods, Jr.

All of your favorite characters - Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch - meet and interact in this whimsical original story.

The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king's festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.  When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse,  the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Dunwoody Junior Wildcats Spring Volleyball Camp

Our next Junior Wildcat Clinics will be on Mondays and Wednesdays, March 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26  at Peachtree Charter Middle School.

The Junior Wildcat program is for 3th - 8th grade girls to teach players volleyball skills and love of the game.   The Junior Wildcats program is laying the foundation for the DHS teams in the future....there are many former Jr Wildcats that are currently playing on the high school teams

Our sessions are designed to teach proper volleyball mechanics in a fun, safe, and learning environment.   We will utilize individual and group drills and competitions to maximize reps while giving quality feedback and challenging you to improve and learn.   The training environment will challenge the kids to do their best in every drill and skill because we believe that there is no substitute for hard work and a great attitude.   Our training environment also provides a ton of individual attention for overall skill improvement.

One change we will be doing for Spring is to have the younger girls (3rd, 4th, 5th graders) on the court together with their own time slot from 5:30-7:00 and the older girls (6th, 7th, 8th graders) with their own court from 7:00-8:30.

If there are "new comers" to volleyball (6th graders) who would feel more comfortable with the younger group, by all means, register for the younger sessions.   The older girl's sessions will have more advanced training....preparing the girls for a little higher level of competition...preparing them for the middle school team and possible JV for the 8th graders.
