Attendance Awareness Month

Good attendance will help your children do well in school, college and at work. Your
children can suffer academically if they miss instructional time in the classroom. All
attendance absences represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn.
Improving student attendance is an essential, cost-effective but often overlooked strategy
for ensuring our students are on-track to learn and succeed. Nationwide, as many as one
out of 10 students are chronically absent, meaning they miss 10 percent or more of school
days, or nearly a month. Chronic absence is a leading, early warning indicator of academic trouble and later dropout.

Remember:
  • Parents need to monitor how many days their student misses school for any reason- excused, unexcused or suspensions.
  • Good attendance helps children do well in school and eventually in the workplace.
  • Excused and unexcused absences easily add up to too much time lost in the classroom.
  • Chronic absences, missing 10 percent of the school year or more, does not just affect the students who miss school.
  • Reducing chronic absence can help close achievement gaps.
  • Relationship building is fundamental to any strategy for improving student attendance.
  • Chronic absences are a problem we can solve when the whole community, along with parents and schools, get involved in improving attendance.

Absences Add Up
The Georgia Compulsory Attendance Law (O.C.G.A. 20-2-60.1)
Georgia law states that any child between the ages of 6-16 must attend school. Any parent/guardian
who do not comply with compulsory attendance law shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and, upon conviction thereof, shall be subject to a fine not less than $25.00 and not greater than $100.00, imprisonment not to exceed 30 days, community services, or any combination of such penalties, at the discretion of the court having jurisdiction. Each day's absence from school in violation of this part after the child's school system notifies the parent/guardian of five (5) unexcused absence shall constitute a separate offense.
