Lake Champlain Listed as One of 7 Best Lakes to Catch Smallmouth Bass
World Fishing Network -- One of the most entertaining species of sportfish to catch in North America is the smallmouth bass. Sure, largemouth bass grow bigger and are more common, but pound-for-pound, they can't match the power of a smallmouth bass on the end of the line.

You can find smallmouth bass throughout much of North America, but take a look to see the best smallmouth bass fisheries in the continent.  Read article
Early History of Atlantic Salmon in New York
Testimonials concerning the historical abundance of salmon in Lake Champlain rival those for Lake Ontario.  At the time Benedict Arnold was cruising the lake in 1776 with an American flotilla, a fisherman, William Gilliland, presented him with 75 salmon in return for which he requested assistance of the ship's carpenter to repair his washed out salmon traps.  Gilliland also mentioned in a letter to the Congress in 1777 that he "had complimented the American Army with fifteen hundred salmon in one year."  Read article
Growth and Behavioral Effects of the Lampricide TFM on Non-Target Fish Species
Juveniles of two species of fish (lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss) and one adult fish species (fathead minnows Pimephales promelas) were exposed to various concentrations of TFM (0.25-7.5 mg/L) in three sets of experiments examining TFM effects on growth, avoidance of TFM treated water, and predation susceptibility. Results indicate that for the conditions tested, TFM has no detectable sub-lethal effects on growth, avoidance behavior, or predation mortality on the fish species tested. Read Abstract

Another Promising Year for Winooski River Salmon
MONPELIER, VT -- Vermont anglers have something new to smile about.  Strong spawning runs of landlocked Atlantic salmon from Lake Champlain have been returning to the Winooski River this fall.  The runs are monitored annnually at the Winooski River fish lift.  A 32-inch, 14-pound male salmon was trapped this fall. Had it been caught by an angler, it would have been a new state record. Read more
Popular Wildlife Management Area Sees Broad Expansion

PITTSFORD, VT - A central Vermont wildlife management area popular with birders and waterfowl hunters has nearly doubled in size, thanks to a donation of land by the Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO).

The Pomainville Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Pittsford, Vt, has added two sections of land that will increase the total area from 360 acres to 572 acres.  The additions include a small section of floodplain forest along Otter Creek and a large parcel of softwood forest on the east side of Route 7.

The WMA was originally purchased by Ducks Unlimited in 2004 and was donated to Vermont Fish & Wildlife a year later.  The lands were purchased in order to create a forested buffer along Otter Creek and to restore 46 acres of formerly drained wetlands, the largest wetland reserve project ever completed in Vermont at that time. Toss An Original Floating Rapala For Fall Fish

When the leaves fall, feed fish a floater - an Original Floating Rapala.

The lure that started it all for Rapala remains a go-to lure, especially in cold-water periods like autumn. "With subtle flicks and twitches, the Floater will dive a bit, lightly roll up and imitate a struggling, injured minnow," explains Rapala Director of Field Promotions Mark Fisher. "Those are all great attributes for cold-water times of year like fall."  Read more
