Lake Health Debate Heats Up in St. Albans

ST. ALBANS, VT -- The quest for a cleaner Lake Champlain found unanimous, passionate support Monday afternoon at a crowded forum in St. Albans.
A unified strategy to that end proved much more elusive. Yes, there was plenty of cheering and applause during the two-hour meeting. Participants pitched their solutions. Among the most popular: more funding for study and incentives; tougher laws; tighter enforcement; and an unsentimental re-examination of how agriculture (manure) has compromised water quality. After Lake Champlain Fish Tournaments: Study Finds Where the Fish Go
| Lake Champlain has been a popular bass fishing spot for some time, made so by its size, surrounding scenery and abundant fish habitat, especially in its northern end.
Dr. Mark Malchoff, along with investigators from the Lake Champlain Research Institute at the State University of New York -- Plattsburgh, have attempted to quantify the impacts of catch-and-release policies of fishing tournaments by radio tagging to see how bass disperse after release. Read more |
Invasive Spiny Water Flea Confirmed in Lake Champlain
| The Lake Champlain Basin Program confirmed late last week that the invasive spiny water flea has entered Lake Champlain. The zooplankton threatens to disrupt the food chain and could become a nuisance to anglers.
The confirmation of the spiny water flea in Lake Champlain was not unexpected. Lake researchers had raised warning flags for more than a year that the tiny crustacean was in the Champlain Canal and its incursion into the lake is imminent.
Lake Champlain International Executive Directer James Ehlers says they've had reports for several months from boaters and anglers that the spiny water flea has been present. Read more |
Muskie Restoration Efforts Continue into Historic VT Range
| SWANTON, VT -- The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department continued its Lake Champlain muskellunge restoration efforts by stocking more than 7,000 fingerling muskies into the Missisquoi River and Missisquoi Bay in earl September.
Since 2008, the Fish and Wildlife Department has stocked more than 38,000 muskies into the Missisquoi River and Missisquoi Bay in an attempt to restore a viable population to Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain is the only lake in New England which historically held native muskies. Read more |

Walleye Stocking Returns to Vermont's Island Pond
| ISLAND POND, VT -- The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has reinstated a program to stock walleye into Island Pond, a 600-acre lake in the Northeast Kingdom, stocking 14,500 fish into the waters this summer.
The stocking program is being done to bolster what is quickly becoming a walleye fishing destination in Vermont- - 20 out of 28 walleye entered in the 2014 Wright's Northeast Kingdom Ice Fishing Derby came from Island Pond. Read more |
Public Interest High in Sturgeon Seasons for Wisconsin Anglers
| MADISON, WISCONSIN -- Wisconsin's efforts to re-establish the lake sturgeon in its natural range continue to advance, even as public interest grows in the majestic and valuable fish. | NEW YORK -- The current (2013-14) freshwater fishing regulations will extend thru March 31, 2015, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens recently announced. Scrambling Birds' Brains: Could This Toxic Algae Offer Clues to Human Diseases?
| THURMOND LAKE, GA - From their perch in a loblolly pine, two bald eagles swoop low over a floating flock of wintering coots. Most of the water birds scatter, but a few are struggling on the surface. They flail on the their backs, their wings twitching. They sense danger, but they cannot flee. Choosing its prey, an eagle dives over one of the sick coots, skewering it with sharp talons.
A mysterious toxin -- with no name and no cure -- lurking in lakes in the South has drilled holes in the brains of these waterbirds, rendering them unable to swim, eat and fly. In turn, the poison likely will also destroy the brain of the eagle that ate the coot. Read article |
