Vermont's walleye fishing starts May 3
The best walleye fishing in New England will begin soon in several Vermont rivers and lakes, according to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.  The department is reminding anglers that walleye fishing season starts in much of the state on the first Saturday in May and that regulations vary, depending on the water you are fishing. More info...
State wildlife grant supports restoring native salmon
in Lake Champlain

Landlocked salmon were once abundant in Lake Champlain, but habitat degradation and over-fishing destroyed the native population by 1850. Removing migration barriers such as dams and cleaning up Vermont's rivers has helped the restoration effort. The VT Fish & Wildlife Dept. has also been stocking Lake Champlain and its tributaries with landlocked salmon. Read more...
Cold rivers benefit walleye anglers
record walleye
Lawrence Pyne shares some thoughts on what's in store for walleye season this year. Between the snow-melt and lingering cooler temperatures, when will walleye start to spawn this year? Read more...
Good trout fishing, turkeys mean it's finally spring

It's been a month now since the vernal equinox, but it's finally beginning to feel like spring out there.

Earlier this month I took a drive through the Adirondacks, and at that time winter still had a firm grip on the region. Lakes were frozen and even trying to access a stream bank to take a shot at trout fishing was next to impossible. This is all changing for the better every day. Read more from Dan Ladd in New York...
Report sturgeon sightings
Lake sturgeon researchers in NY want your help to report sightings of these magnificent fish. While sturgeon restoration programs have traditionally focused on the VT side of the lake, NY biologists want to know if anyone sees or catches sturgeon in NY waters and tributaries, especially fish that may be spawning in tributaries. To report a sturgeon sighting, please contact Doug Carlson at (315) 785-2263 or [email protected]. Find out more and learn about the organization NY Sturgeon for Tomorrow here...

Vermont fish
While Vermont is in the middle of the local food movement, Sevens Days explores why Vermonters don't eat more fish from Lake Champlain. LCI's Director and several partners help uncover the mystery and help determine what the next steps should be.  Read the fascinating article...

May 2014 | World Fish Migration Day
and the Swanton Dam on the Missisquoi River

May 24th is World Fish Migration Day.  It is also a good day to think about removal of the Swanton Dam on Vermont's Missisquoi River. LCI's scientist brings you on a fascinating tour of the dam's history and what Champlain's fisheries could be when the dam is removed--a project sometimes called the most important project to restore the lake's native fish populations. Can technology end overfishing?
Back in 2002, Thomas Kraft, managing director of Norpac Fisheries Export, came up with the idea to electronically track each fish the company captures and sells. Soon after Norpac's electronic monitoring system was up and running two years later, Kraft realized that the technology was not only an effective management tool, but it could also help the company trace fish through the supply chain and guarantee its products were not caught using illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing practices.
