Ice shanties must be removed before the ice weakens 

Vermont state law requires that ice fishing shanties must be removed from the ice before the ice becomes unsafe or ice loses its ability to support the shanty out of the water, or before the last Sunday in March (the 30th this year), whichever comes first. Read thepress release here!

NY DEC reminds anglers to remove fish shanties

Reminder: Ice anglers must  have removed all ice fishing shanties on the ice by March 15. From the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. More here!

 

 

Boat launch stewards needed!     
The Lake Champlain Basin Program and New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) are seeking part-time boat launch stewards to deliver interpretive invasive species spread prevention messages to boaters on Lake Champlain during the summer of 2014. Three of Vermont's largest fish of 2013 are new state records  

Anglers have been entering impressive catches in Vermont's record fish program every year since records were first kept by the Fish & Wildlife Department in 1969, and 2013 was no exception.  Three of the largest fish entered last year also qualified as new all-time state records. See them here!

Spring bass fishing tip for your friends at Yamaha

For pre-spawn bass, try fishing backwards.

Each spring when he's searching for pre-spawn bass, Matt Herren uses a fish-finding process he occasionally describes as "fishing backwards." The Yamaha Pro first locates prime spawning flats bass will be moving to, then moves out to slightly deeper water and structure where he believes bass will staging immediately prior to their move into the shallows. Researchers identify new Burbot spawning behavior

It's a winter's night on Lake Michigan. Underwater in the shallows, the eel-like and lowly burbot gather in a brown writhing mass to spawn. With their serpentine bodies and dangly chin barbels, it's not a pretty picture, but the activity ensures the species' survival as one of the top predators in the food chain along with lake trout.
