A FEW IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
|

Hi College Bound friends!
Seniors- May 1st is your big day to commit to your chosen school AND to contact the schools you're turning down and notify them you will not be attending. Also, it's classy and appropriate to jot a note to your recommendation writers and any other adults who helped you through this process. Thank them for their assistance and let them know of your decision.
Juniors- Over the summer you want to finalize your list of colleges you plan to pursue (5-8 is typical), prepare for your fall SAT or ACT exams, work on your application essays, do some volunteer work and attend any pre-college camps that appeal to you. The Common Application will be re-opened on August 1st, allowing you to start your applications even before school starts.
Sophomores and Freshmen- Use your summers to pursue your hobbies and interests, to volunteer, travel, start your own small business and perhaps attend some pre-college camps. What you choose to do over your summers can really add that extra pizazz to your applications and set you apart from the students who just used their summers to hang out at the pool and play x-box! Sophomores also need to prep for the PSAT they will take in Oct of their junior year since so many outstanding scholarships are offered to students who score well.
College Bound Essentials- Lake Wylie- May 10th, 9:00-noon

Students- Over the Summer, Use some Mental Floss!
|

Colleges love students who are aware of world and national events, who can articulately discuss issues of the day and share well-informed opinions. But honestly, who has the time to stay abreast of everything when you're a student absorbed in classes, sports, chorus, dance, youth groups and more?
Good news! Summer is almost here and you can use a bit of it to become a well-informed future voter and future college student! It's never too early to start and there are some great resources to help you plug in.
Mental Floss Magazine- This is a fun and informative magazine covering a wealth of topics worth discussing over a family dinner. They also have entertaining YouTube videos.
TED talks- Ted.com- Under the "watch" tab, you'll find hundreds of thought provoking videos made all over the world on topics of Technology, Entertainment and Design. For example, some of their most recent talks include topics such as:
- Are athletes really getting better, stronger, faster?
- Autism- What we know and don't yet know
- Success, failure and the drive to keep creating
- My daughter, Malala (She's the young girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out for education for girls)
Need to watch TED on the run? Get the free phone app! My 15 year old and 17 year old sons wind down at night before going to sleep by watching a TED talk or two. Enjoy!
The Week (Magazine) - We get this magazine because it sums up all of the major news stories of the week and presents them in a condensed and fairly balanced format.
While I hope you take an interest in what's happening in the world because it is a smart thing to do, it may also interest you to know that scholarship interviewers like to ask questions about current events. Enjoy these accessible and interesting tools!

College Rankings by US News- Interesting but Use Your Own Filter
|
Each year US News and Forbes release their rankings of the top colleges and universities in the US. I enjoy reviewing the rankings and seeing who moved up and down from the previous year. While I don't dispute that the top schools have some excellent academic track records, I encourage students and parents to not get too caught up in them. What makes a school the best fit for you may not be a criterium used in the rankings.
I think it is very important to consider the track record of a college you're considering to make sure it has a pattern of serving its students well. Ask about its freshman retention rate (i.e.- how many freshmen come back to be sophomores), how many graduate in four years, the average class size and the student-to-faculty ratio (lower is better).
Beyond that, you should consider how well a school fits your personality, aligns with your beliefs and faith, is located in an area that appeals to you, connects students with great internships and job placement, and offers majors your are interested in studying
Ultimately, the right school for your best friend doesn't make it the right school for you. This is your future. Get informed and make the decision that is right for you.

If your student would benefit from the most comprehensive and thorough class available to help them prepare for the October SAT (or PSAT), then I'm happy to tell you that I've worked it out for Princeton Review to bring their Ultimate SAT prep class to Lake Wylie in exchange for me lending them the use of my seminar room.
It will meet Sunday afternoons at my office. The director, Brian Culbreth, is even offering a $250 discount to every student if you enter the promo code "Summer14Prep" and if you register by April 30th.
Princeton Review is the nation's leading company for preparing students for the SAT and ACT. To learn more and potentially sign up,
2) On the home page, you'll see the middle block says, "Find a Prep Course Near You". Pick "SAT" as the course and put in "29710" as the zip code. It will take you right to the information about the class.
If your student would benefit from the accountability of an instructor and the structure of a class, this one is a good one to consider.
