Carbohydrates, Sugar and Your Child

Carbs are a necessary part of a healthy diet.  What is confusing is that some carbs are better than others, and it's very important the typical added sugar be limited.

Parenting Class
The Family Resource Center at Riverside will host a parenting class in English that starts Wednesday, November 2!    The program is  held during the morning hours of 9:30-10:30 a.m.  The best news is that the program will be  free to our FWISD families!  The Boys and Girls Clubs will facilitate the program and teach parents the Positive Action program.  The program will provide information that has been proven to be very beneficial in helping parents help their children grow to become positive thinking, positive acting, healthy and responsible adults.

TCU Reading Frogs

Students are invited to meet and read with the TCU Reading Frogs at the "Fall in Love with Reading Festival" on Saturday, November 5, from 9-11:00 a.m.  The event will be held at the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility on the TCU Campus.  There will be special prizes and free eye exams, as well as free books for kids ages 4-11 years old.  For more information, call 817-429-4024 or visit www.scoreagoal.org.

Yummy Snack

Pumpkin Seeds!
Fall means pumpkins, and pumpkins mean pumpkin seeds!

Place seeds on a cookie sheet and brush or spray with olive oil.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper (other spices work, too).
Place in oven, 300 degrees for 20-30 minutes (until golden brown).
Enjoy!

The Fix-It-Up Club

We tightened another table for Joey.

We took a pencil sharpener off the wall for Joey.

We fixed Donnette's bird house.

We cleaned two rain barrels. They are for sale. Do you want a rain barrel for $60? (They cost $105 at Marshall Grain)

We assembled a broken chair.

We  took a chain off of Todd's bike.

We did some research on sewing machines. We want to sell one of them. Do you want a sewing machine? They are $100?  Please contact

if you have any things you need fixed up. Bring your items to room 2 on Friday mornings.

Terrific Thursday
Hello, Carlson families!   This week Debbie's fourth grade class took care of hosting Terrific Thursday. The theme was "Halloween."  Thank you to the families of this fourth grade class, and especially to Christine Jones, for coordinating the whole thing.  Good job!
The next Terrific Thursday will be hosted by Michelle's fourth grade class on November 10, followed by Rosemary's class on December 1.
Have a happy Halloween, and "Dia de Los Muertos!"
Thank you all!
Wendy Valenzuela

Mathoween

"The 2011-2012 school year Mathoween will be taking place on October 28th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the school.  Families have been invited to University Baptist Church's Trunk-or-Treat immediately following Mathoween.

Mathoween is like Halloween but math has taken over! This year, we'll have a math costume parade and contest!  All costumes have to be related to math and made by you!  We'll provide a rubric to guide costume creation. There will also be a scavenger hunt based on Alice Carlson's 20th year anniversary.

For more information, continue reading the Carlson Weekly, look for letters that will be sent home, and check our fifth grade blog at coyotepurple.blogspot.com."

Carlson Teachers Win

One of the secrets of our school's success is our exceptional teaching staff. This year we have much to celebrate. Congratulations to Genifer Best, winner of the 2011 Angela D. Paulos Chair for Teaching Excellence in Visual Arts, and Arthur Harris, winner of the Lockheed Martin Chair for Teaching Excellence in Mathematics. Genifer and Arthur are the sixth and seventh teachers on Carlson's staff to be awarded this prestigious honor. Congratulations!
