Northeast Oregon: The Best Huckleberry Picking in the World

We're heading to Northeast Oregon to pick sweet, ripe and ready-to-eat huckleberries Oregon is famous for. Did you know: Oregon has some of the best huckleberry picking in the world, according to huckle-expert, Dr. Danny L. Barney, professor of horticulture at the University of Idaho.

But where to find them? Huckleberries thrive in forests throughout Northeast Oregon. Look at elevations below 4,000 feet, or above 6,500 feet, often in profusion by the side of the road, and on public land, so you don't need a permit or permission to pick. Huckleberry Hound Dogs will want to head to the Eagle Creek country northeast of Baker City, around Granite northwest of Sumpter, and in the Strawberry Mountains south of Prairie City.
