Southern Oregon encompasses a vast and magnificently diverse geological spectrum. I've rounded up three fantastic byways to travel and some recreational inspiration while you're at it. Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway The Steens, in southeastern Oregon is a magnificent place to go for wide open spaces, rugged beauty and winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The BLM describes The Steens this way: "The Steens Mountain area offers an extraordinary landscape of volcanic uplifts, deep glacier-carved gorges, stunning scenery, wilderness, wild rivers, and a rich diversity of plant and animal species. Winter recreation on the Steens gives visitors a chance to experience this rugged country on skis, snowshoes, or snowmobiles. Steens Mountain is located 60 miles south of Burns near Frenchglen and Page Springs Campground. Take State Highway 205 to Frenchglen and follow the signs east to the Steens Mountain Loop Road." Trivia
|
This infamous meadow, flanking the west slope of Steens Mountain in southeastern Oregon, earned its name in the days of the Old West. Entrepreneuring females from Vale, Oregon would set up tents in the meadow to provide services to the sheepherders and cattlemen of the area. Many of the sheepherders were Basque American immigrants, and their sometimes explicit carvings can still be found in the bark of aspen trees surrounding the meadow.
Officially named Whorehouse Meadow, its name was changed briefly in the 1960s to "Naughty Girl Meadow" on BLM maps. Due to public outcry, however, its original name was restored in 1981.
