Snow Dogs in Central Oregon
Unleashed and On the Move
 | | Pippin, the Golden on the Go |
Between the months of September and May, and in certain areas, the Deschutes National Forest lets dogs run wild, off-leash and free. Which is great news for a certain dog I know, as well as locals in the dog-loving town of Bend, Oregon, and travelers who don't leave home without their best friends. So, I've rounded up three of my favorite places in the Deschutes National Forest to take Pippin, my Golden-on-the-Go, in the winter months. Make a Splash for Special Olympics!
Thousands of people around Oregon run into icy cold water to raise money for Special Olympics Oregon. As a "plunger" you register to participate in one of the five plunges around the state. Maybe you join a team. Maybe not. Then you raise a minimum of $50 in pledges from friends and family (but the more you raise, the bigger your incentive prizes). Then on plunge day you run or jump into the water and get out as fast as you can. You decide how far you want to go in. It's all done for fun and to raise money for a great cause. Trivia
|
Dedicated by President Roosevelt in 1937, Timberline Lodge and ski area were built with the rugged spirit of individualism. And yet, as a product of the president's New Deal policies, it was also born out of a spirit of cooperation and teamwork. Timberline Lodge was born during the throes of the Great Depression. It was a "make work project" during a severely idled national economy. It was, and is still today, a symbol of hope and purpose.
