When Winter Hits, Head to Oregon's Lake & River Retreats

Columbia Cliff Suite
Suite at Columbia Cliff Villas

When the weather outside is frightful, one of the best things I've found to do is to head to the nearest lodge to sit in front of a crackling fire and warm the spirit - inside and out. Winter has descended upon us and the holidays are taking over our lives, which creates the perfect need for some hibernating and rejuvenation. Here are five of my favorite respites from the mayhem of the modern world - all within an hour of Portland, Oregon. READ MORE

On my "Fave 5 Lake & River Retreats" List: Timberline Lodge, Columbia Cliff Villas, Mt. Hood Vacation Rentals, The Resort at the Mountain and the Columbia Gorge Hotel. Get the details here.

Unique New Year's Events in Oregon

One of the coolest things about Oregon is a landscape that spans from the ocean's shores, through fertile valleys, up into the high Cascade Mountains and across the dramatic desert of the eastern part of our state. Equally unique and rising to the challenge of our topography, event organizers all over Oregon have come up with some non-traditional things to do to ring in the New Year. I've rounded up a few of my faves:

* Bonfire on the Snow in Bend/Sunriver

* Manzanita New Year's Eve Parade on the Oregon Coast

* The First Run & Walk in Portland

* 2012/2013 First Run in Eugene

* Portland Spirit New Year's Eve Cruise on the Willamette River

Post your own event/s on the Oregon Lakes & Rivers website. It's free!

Timberline Lodge

Timberline Heritage

Dedicated by President Roosevelt in 1937, Timberline Lodge and ski area were built with the rugged spirit of individualism. And yet, as a product of the president's New Deal policies, it was also born out of a spirit of cooperation and teamwork. Timberline Lodge was born during the throes of the Great Depression. It was a "make work project" during a severely idled national economy. It was, and is still today, a symbol of hope and purpose.
