It's not Autumn. It's not Winter. I don't care what the calendar says, we're in the in-between time, when staying indoors can be the most compelling adventure on the horizon.
But you don't have to sequester yourself just because the days are shorter, the rain has replaced the sun, and the snow waits for colder times. My favorite in-between adventures combine a brisk hike - and after - a comfy chair in front of a roaring fireplace. Resplendent! 15 Minutes at Suttle Lake

It's between autumn winter at Suttle Lake; it's November. Too early for snowshoes and too late for shorts. In fact, it's damn cold. I looked like a pale blue apparition on the shoreline, walking with my golden ghost dog, on that gray and hazy day. It snowed, it rained, and later the sun poked out its lazy head and then made a hasty retreat. For my part, I was in between meetings and took to the trail for some exercise with my trusty lad, and co-conspirator, Pippin. But I didn't have a warm coat in the car, and since Pip takes his wherever he goes, I wrapped myself up in his big doggy blanket for warmth. A 3.7-mile trail surrounds Suttle Lake, which sits in Cascade Mountain Range. Suttle Lake is between the towns of Sisters and McKenzie Bridge, between Eugene and Bend, and between the ocean and the desert. I love it there. READ MORE
