NREC Nitrogen Webinar next week
The Illinois Nutrient Research and Education Council (NREC) will hold a webinar next Tuesday to update those in agriculture on an important NREC-funded research project. It will take a look at "A Field Scale Comparison of Nitrogen Efficiency within Conventional and Alternative Nitrogen Management Systems."

Those attending will hear from Dr. Shalamar Armstrong, one of the researchers who has received funding from NREC, who will talk more about cover crops. He will provide real-world insights on cover crop integration into production agriculture, as well as the impact on agronomic, environmental, and economic issues related to corn and soybean production:
  • Nitrogen timing and cover crop impact on distribution of soil N
  • Determine impact of N timing to nitrate loss via tile drainage
  • Evaluate cover crop influence on N loss
  • Quantify relationship to cover crop, N loss and yield response

The webinar will take place next Tuesday, June 14, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Registration is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about cover crops. Click here to register.

Registration open for summer conference
Registration is open for the 2016 Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) Farm Income and Innovation Conference (formerly known as the Commodities Conference), held July 27, at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

The conference will feature two general sessions and multiple breakouts that focus on topics traditionally included in the Commodities Conference, but will also include new topics which focus on technology and emphasize farm innovation.

Click here to register online, or contact your county Farm Bureau. Registration is $35 through July 15 and includes lunch. You can also register at the conference.
Fueld by Farmers
Last year, U.S. farmers harvested a record 3.93 billion bushels of soybeans and 13.6 billion bushels of corn. Not only does the mere sale of these commodities produce economic benefits, but their growth provides a pathway toward North American energy independence, and as a result, a pathway to greater national security, Rep. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.) writes in an FBNews Viewpoint article.
Why don't you post #AgLoudAgProud?
There are many reasons to have pride in U.S. agriculture. CropLife America provides six in a downloadable infographic available on Facebook. Show your ag pride! Post a selfie this summer and tag it #AgLoudAgProud.

BEN FLIES A KITE

On June 10, 1752, Ben Franklin flew a kite.

Benjamin Franklin's wildly dangerous kite experiment has grown into an American legend. Almost everyone has heard of Franklin flying a kite with a key in an electrical storm, but few of us actually understand how the experiment works.

Ben hypothesized that lightning is an electrical phenomenon, and that the electrical effect of lightning might be transferable to another object and cause an effect that could be recognized as electricity. He set out to prove it in an experiment.
