LaHood Wins Special Election
The results are in from yesterday's special election to fill the vacant 18th Congressional District seat. State Senator Darin LaHood easily won the seat in Congress that represents all of Pike and Scott counties. LaHood announced he will resign from the Illinois Senate next week and be sworn into office as the newest member of the 114th Congress.
Sen. Kirk Now a Cosponsor of S. 1140

On Wednesday, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL), became the 44th cosponsor of S. 1140-the Federal Water Quality Protection Act. This bill requires the Department of the Army and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in the interest of protecting traditional navigable waters from water pollution, to adhere to certain principles and take specified actions in proposing any regulation revising the definitions of "waters of the United States" and "navigable waters." Farm Bureau has conducted an intensive call in and e-mail campaign directed at Senators Kirk and Durbin seeking their support of the measure to reign in the US EPA. We appreciate all the effort made by members of the Pike and Scott County Farm Bureaus over the past five-months.

AFBF to China--Open GMO Trade
AFBF, in conjunction with several GMO coalition partners, is working to gather signatures on a letter to President Barack Obama urging his direct intervention with China's President Xi to reinforce an agreed-to commitment to be more efficient and fair regarding approval of biotech products. Last year, Obama's efforts capped a broad-based public/private effort to push China to be more responsive in bilateral discussions to improve its acceptance of innovations in U.S. agricultural technologies. State Farm Bureaus are encouraged to add their voice by sending letters to both presidents, in addition to urging state governors to do likewise.

ON THIS DAY
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
NEVER FORGET
"9/11" is shorthand for four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group that occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001. The attacks killed 2,977 people.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists from al-Qaeda, hijacked four commercial airplanes, deliberately crashing two of the planes into the upper floors of the North and South towers of the World Trade Center complex and a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va. The Twin Towers ultimately collapsed because of the damage sustained from the impacts and the resulting fires. After learning about the other attacks, passengers on the fourth hijacked plane, Flight 93, fought back, and the plane was crashed into an empty field in western Pennsylvania about 20 minutes by air from Washington, DC.
The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people from 93 nations. 2,753 people were killed in New York, 184 people were killed at the Pentagon and 40 people were killed on Flight 93.
