The forecast for the summer season was exceptional this year, we were expecting one of the best years ever. However, we noticed eventually a slowdown of the bookings as of this week. We are sure that when the media will not be covering Cyprus as prime news any more, people will regain confidence. As we are very busy for the Latin Easter, guests will leave and share their positive experience with the travel agencies. European officials have already felt the characteristic warmth of local hospitality and enjoyed the wonderful weather as they are welcomed to the island. During the Presidency, around 180 conferences were held in different regions of the island, with some 40,000 people visiting Cyprus for the government meetings. |

Cyprus Tourism aims to attract Mid East travel market

 Tourism body also working with Emirates and Etihad to increase number of flights

Cyprus may not be getting the most flattering headlines right now but Cyprus Tourism director Vassilis Theocharides is confident that negative publicity surrounding the economy won't affect tourism on the island.
Speaking at a Cyprus Tourism networking event in Dubai, Theocharides said: "If you look at Greece and the problems they had, you'll see that tourism there wasn't affected at all. In fact tourism has been going up there. That shows that this kind of coverage doesn't affect people's travel decisions. In fact people get slightly more interested because they think that Cyprus might now become cheaper. Our hope is that tourism can now fill the gap left by other market segments. We have to go back to basics and what we do best and that is tourism."
"A lot of corporate head quarters and regional offices are based here, and if your corporate office is here there aren't that many places that are only a three to four hour flight away," said Theocharides.
He added: "we have been working closely with regional airlines. We can't affect them on pricing but what we can do is make sure that the airlines are coming to us and have been successful in getting Etihad to fly Abu Dhabi to Cyprus."
"We're now working on trying to get them to go daily and we want Emirates to fly double daily," he revealed.

كانت التوقعات بالنسبة للموسم السياحي الصيفي فوق العادة هذه السنة، حيث كنا نتوقع واحداً من أفضل المواسم على الإطلاق. ولكننا لاحظنا في الأسبوع الجاري تراجعاً في الحجوزات. أننا متأكدون بأن ما أن يتوقف الإعلام عن تناول موضوع قبرص كخبر أساسي، سيستعيد الناس ثقتهم بجزيرتنا. وبما أننا نقترب حالياً من عيد الفصح الكاثوليكي، فإننا نتوقع أن تكون هذه مناسبة جيدة لتبادل التجارب والإنطباعات الإيجابية التي ستتشكل في هذا السياق. وقد اختبر الزوار الأوربيون الذين شاركوا في المناسبات الرسمية المقامة خلال فترة رئاسة قبرص للاتحاد الأوربي مؤخراً، دفء الاستقبال القبرصي والطقس الرائع. فخلال فترة الرئاسة الأوربية عقد حوالي 180 اجتماعاً في كافة أنحاء الجزيرة وتواجد حوالي 40 ألف شخص بمهمات رسمية ضمن ذاك الإطار.

قد لا تكن العناوين التي تحتل صدر الصحافة هذه الأيام مجزية لقبرص ولكن فاسيليس ثيوخاريديس، مدير السياحة القبرصية، واثق بأن ذلك لن يؤثر على السياحة في جزيرة قبرص.
وخلال ورشة عمل أقيمت مؤخراً في دبي، قال ثيوخاريديس: "إذا ما نظرت إلى اليونان والمشاكل التي واجهتها، ستلاحظ بأن السياحة هناك لم تتأثر على الإطلاق. في الحقيقة فإن السياحة ازدهرت. هذا يدل بأن تغطية إعلامية من هذا القبيل لا تؤثر على قرارات السفر. في الواقع قد يزيد من اهتمام الناس الذين يفكرون بأن الأسعار ربما تكون أرخص الآن. أملنا أن تقوم السياحة بالتعويض عن الفجوات التي تركتها قطاعات السوق الأخرى. يجب علينا العودة إلى الأساسيات وإلى ما يمكن لنا أن نقوم به على أكمل وجه، أي السياحة".
وأشار ثيوخارديس: "هنالك العديد من المقرات الإقليمية في دبي، فإذا كان مقر شركتك هنا، فإن الخيارات الموجودة على بعد ثلاث أو أربع ساعات لهي محدودة".
وأضاف: "نحن نعمل بصورة وثيقة مع شركات الطيران في المنطقة. لا يمكننا أن نؤثر عليهم من ناحية التسعير ولكن يمكننا أن نضمن تواجد هذه الشركات على خط قبرص وزيادة عدد رحلاتها. فقد تمكنا من إضافة طيران الإتحاد قبل عدة سنوات والآن نعمل على جعل رحلات طيران الإتحاد يومية، فيما نعمل أيضاً على مضاعفة رحلات طيران الإمارات إلى قبرص والتي هي الآن يومية".
