Tips, Tools & Tactics

Welcome to our January issue! We're focusing on transformation of various sorts--your approach to others, your career, and even the workplace of the future. Please let us know what else you'd like to read about and how the ideas here work for you.   - Diana

The ONE Thing to Do More of in 2015

This time of year everybody has a To Do list for you: "10 Ways to Lose 30 Pounds in Just One Month" or "5 Steps to Becoming a Perfect Manager/Spouse/ Parent." I myself could even be accused of this kind of thing.

But here's a possibility: What if you were to pare down all those lists to just ONE piece of advice you could actually follow?

Corny as it sounds, I will call it "shining your light." That's it! And you get to define specifically how you do it.

Want Some Ideas?

To give you some ideas, here are a few examples I have witnessed in just the past few days:

1. A manager whose chronically negative employee
has demoralized his work team finally got the courage to have a chat with him about what exactly he could do differently. The staffer had no idea he was perceived that way and agreed to take the recommended actions.

Did the manager have to do this? Technically, no (though he clearly should have done it). He could have put off the chat, catastrophizing about how badly it might turn out--which is what most of us do. He would have had an easier day. But instead he chose to take the one action that could actually make a difference.

2. Without being asked, a new employee proposed

to her company's owners a social-media plan that will bring their struggling business into the 21st century. Did she have to do it? No. Will it bring her money or a promotion? Maybe not. But did the action boost her confidence, demonstrate her range and promise a positive difference for her employer? Definitely.
