Emotional Intelligence: Ten Tips
Why You Should Act Like a Big Baby at Work

This past Spring I met my four-month old twin nephews for the first time-smiling, squalling, delightful little beings soaking up all that life had to offer. Seeing their response to the world reminded me that we have a lot to learn from babies.

We adults at work especially have a lot to learn. On some level we understand that our intense, worried approach to work is unhelpful, but often we don't consider the alternatives. So here's a reminder of 10 ways we should act more like big babies-and be better off for it:

PLAY - Explore a new idea, toying with the possibilities instead of weatherproofing out all the anxious, imagined what-ifs. Imagine instead: What if this project turned out really well?

LAUGH - Tell a joke. Laugh heartily at others' jokes instead of smirking drily while continuing to stare at your computer screen.

WONDER -- Think about what's next with a genuinely curious mind. Ask questions to learn rather than to critique.

EXPRESS YOUR NEEDS - No, I'm not going to recommend screaming when you don't get what you want. But do remember that your coworkers and colleagues are not mind-readers. Act accordingly.

TAKE RISKS - Go out on a limb, even if only a little. When we get too self-protective, we stop learning. We become like those people everybody hates to work with: "We've always done it this way." "That will never work."
