Since March of this year, The Scarborough Hospital and Rouge Valley Health System have been exploring ways to work together to design a sustainable health system for the Scarborough community.

The discussions are a result of a March 27 Central East LHIN Board of Directors' motion directing TSH to partner with RVHS in a facilitated integration process to identify how the two hospital corporations can create a Scarborough hospital services delivery model. The goal is to develop an integrated and coordinated model to support the delivery of high-quality, accessible and safe hospital programs and services for the residents of Scarborough.

Patients praise Maternal Newborn Program at both hospital campuses

Katheeja Musatheek can really vouch for the great care in The Scarborough Hospital's Maternal Newborn program.

On June 7, 2013, Katheeja's third child was born at the General campus. It's also her third time entrusting the safe delivery and care of her child and herself to TSH. Her 12-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter were born at the General campus. And although Katheeja has always had an excellent care experience, it was the efforts of the care team for her latest addition - another boy - that really impressed her. Continue reading Katheeja's story.

Jaime Thomas chose to deliver her twins at The Scarborough Hospital's Birchmount campus and after her wonderful experience, she's glad she did.

The first-time Scarborough mom gave birth to Tabitha and Tony on October 31, 2012; her niece and nephew were born at Birchmount so that made her want to have her children there, too.  Continue reading Jamie's story.

TSH has historically performed very well in the obstetrics - most significantly in the area of Vaginal Birth After Caesarian Section (VBAC).

In a recent national study performed by the Canadian Institute of Health Information, TSH posted the best rates in the GTA for providing women with this successful procedure.

TSH opens new dialysis unit at Bridgepoint

For more than 20 years, The Scarborough Hospital has partnered with Bridgepoint Active Healthcare to deliver dialysis services to complex continuing care patients. This partnership has entered an exciting, new phase with the opening of an updated satellite dialysis unit in Bridgepoint's new, state-of-the art hospital that just opened this past April.

"TSH is home to one of the largest Regional Nephrology Programs in North America, with over 6,000 patients receiving care," said Robert Biron, President and CEO of The Scarborough Hospital. "Combined with Bridgepoint's leading approach in the care and treatment of adults living with complex health conditions, we are able to deliver a superior integrated care experience for these patients."

The modern unit offers many improvements that will enhance dialysis services, including:

  • A 2,200 square foot space, with six dialysis suites running three shifts per day, providing hemodialysis for 18 patients.
  • Dialysis stations which are 8' by 9', exceeding current infection control standards.
  • Ceiling lifts, as well as one station configured to accommodate bariatric patients.
  • Infrastructure for the future addition of nocturnal dialysis, which would allow patients to fully participate in Bridgepoint's rehabilitation and wellness services during the day.

The event also included a special tribute to TSH Nephrologist Dr. Janet Roscoe who, over the years, has advocated, supported and provided for the care needs of Complex Continuuing Care patients on dialysis. Dr. Roscoe was presented with a plaque honoring her work.
