When Margaret Heldsinger was recently diagnosed with complex diabetes, she was grateful for the opportunity to receive care at the new Centre for Complex Diabetes Care (CCDC) at The Scarborough Hospital.

"It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful," says Margaret of the clinic's services and staff. "They provide closer monitoring for my diabetes, but help with many other issues as well."

Patients responding to survey and providing valuable feedback

The Scarborough Hospital commits to providing an outstanding care experience for each and every patient. To accomplish this goal, feedback from our patients is essential in determining the areas in which we excel, areas that require improvement, and new ideas for future development.

Our Patient Satisfaction Survey provides the hospital with valuable insight into what patients expect from us as a community hospital. Great news - you are responding! The survey return rate has increased from July to December 2012, the last reported quarters, and our patients are sharing their experiences with us.

"Each time a patient visits TSH, it's an opportunity to share their feedback about the care we deliver, which helps us improve our services and enhance healthcare for everyone in the community," says Anne Marie Males, Vice-President, Patient Experience. "We truly want to thank those patients who took the time to complete the survey and return it to us. We value your opinions, and we encourage all our patients who receive the survey to share their thoughts on the delivery of care at TSH."

The survey is mailed out on a monthly basis to a random list of patients who visited an inpatient unit or the hospital's emergency department that month. Data is collected and analyzed by a nationally-acclaimed research company, NRC Picker, so all personal information is confidential.

NRC Picker is dedicated to improving the quality of care provided in the healthcare industry. They are widely used by hospitals across Ontario and are known for their extensive research of the patient experience. Click here to learn more about NRC Picker.

The Scarborough Hospital's Debbie Daly is one of more than 140 nurses across Ontario nominated for the Toronto Star's Nightingale Award.

Debbie is routinely praised by colleagues, patients and family members of patients - any number of them could have submitted her nomination.

Thank you cards abound on the shelf in her office at the GAIN Clinic where Debbie, a nurse practitioner, is the clinic lead. Patient testimonials routinely come in about the clinic, which is part of a geriatric assessment and intervention network, and most of them highlight the care of Debbie or her staff.
