Veronika Harry loves to go outside, to see the blue sky - to enjoy life again, and she credits a large part of her recovery to the staff at The Scarborough Hospital.
"When you have a mental illness, and someone tries to help you, you resist, but now I know it was the best thing that could have happened to me," says Veronika. "If not for the help of the program I would have been out on the street, and I was grateful to have support 24/7."
Originally from Austria, Veronika had worked as a social worker for assaulted women and children before being diagnosed with depression. She initially struggled with the transition from healthcare professional to patient, but following treatment and care from the intensive case management program at TSH, Veronika began to accept help.

The hospital has demonstrated continued excellence in this indicator and our rates for vaginal birth after caesarian section remain the best in the GTA.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with caesarean sections. The Obstetrics Department makes it a point to offer mothers the option of a vaginal birth if they have previously had a c-section.
"The Scarborough Hospital delivers more than 5,000 babies per year, and continues to be a regional leader in Women's Health services," says Dr. Nathan Roth, Obstetrician at TSH. "Our ongoing commitment is to provide the best and safest care. Our success reflects our effective collaborative care model combining patient choice with the expertise of our clinical professionals, and placing a high value on an interprofessional team approach."
The Scarborough Hospital is committed to evidenced-based, collaborative and quality care, which is reflected in our partnerships with our community family physicians, our patients and our teaching program that supports the next generation of healthcare providers including medical, midwifery and nursing students.

Tom Mitrovski is a good-natured man with a warm smile who appreciates every day - and Tom's been able to enjoy more than 12,000 days he might not have otherwise.
Tom is an organ recipient. Thanks to the selflessness of one family, he received a new kidney in November 1979. In the more than 33 years he's enjoyed since then, he's been able to watch his three children grow up, get married and have children of their own.
Tom appreciates that gift every day.
"I am able to see my nine grandchildren," he says. "I have a different outlook. I have a second chance at life. I appreciate that."
But Tom is one of the lucky ones. In Ontario, there are nearly 1,500 people waiting for an organ. There are 89 alone in Scarborough. Every three days, someone dies waiting for an organ. One donor can save up to eight lives.
