Over the past number of months, our hospital has undertaken a Strategic Plan Refresh in an effort to provide more clarity and guidance regarding which services should expand, remain fixed or decrease in order to meet the acute care hospital needs of our community.

A great deal of work has been completed by our physicians, clinical staff, administration and Board members. While we know that we must live within our financial means, the guiding principle for this work has been to design an integrated system that provides quality care for the residents we serve.

Jaime Thomas chose to deliver her twins at The Scarborough Hospital's Birchmount campus and after her wonderful experience, she's glad she did.

The first-time Scarborough mom gave birth to Tabitha and Tony on October 31, 2012; her niece and nephew were born at Birchmount so that made her want to have her children there, too.

Foundation raises $5 million to improve access to care

On February 6, The Scarborough Hospital Foundation celebrated the success of its "Look Inside Yourself" MRI campaign.

The campaign raised $5 million to purchase a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine for the Birchmount site. Since its installation in October 2011, wait times, on average, have been reduced by more than half.

"Prior to the opening of the MRI at Birchmount, our average wait time was more than 100 days; today it is about 40 days, which means our patients are getting faster access to a vital diagnostic tool," says Tom Jackson, Patient Care Director of Diagnostic Imaging.

In addition to improved wait times, the introduction of the new unit has allowed TSH to use its resources more efficiently. In previous years, more than 225 inpatients were being transferred from the Birchmount campus to the General campus for a scan, which required a nurse to accompany the patient.
