Here's a recipe directly from Mitford to you. Christmas is coming!

Father Tim's Christmas Morning Breakfast Casserole

Nonstick cooking spray for the baking dish
1 pound ground pork sausage
1/4 cup chopped shallots or green onions
10 pieces challah or white bread, torn into small pieces
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
8 large eggs
2 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 teaspoons dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Coat a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Place the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the sausage, stirring, until it crumbles. Add the shallots a few minutes before the sausage is done. Drain the sausage and shallots on a paper towel-lined plate.

Place the torn bread pieces in the baking dish and sprinkle the cheese evenly over the bread. Spoon the sausage evenly over the cheese.

In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, salt, mustard and Worcestershire sauce together. Pour evenly over the sausage and bread mixture. Cover and chill the casserole for at least 4 hours, or up to 8 hours.

When you are ready to bake the casserole, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the dish from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature for at least 30 minutes before baking. Bake for 45 minutes, or until set.

African Violets
Grandma Was Right

If you think back to visits with Grandma and remember what her living room or kitchen looked like chances are you'll notice pretty little windowsill plants that seemed to always be in bloom with dainty and colorful blossoms. Those are African violets! Grandma always seemed to know how best to make a house a home; good food, comfortable decorating, the right advice. African violets were part of all of that and they are a part that can help to make our homes cheery just like hers.

African Violets There are a few things you need to know to grow African violets successfully but the process isn't difficult at all. African violets aren't demanding and, with a little care, they will reward you year after year with almost perpetual blooms. The blossoms on Grandma's plants were probably purple, pink, blue or white but you have a great variety of colors to choose from today as well as the choice of flat, single colored petals and leaves or ruffled and multicolored petals and leaves.

African violets thrive in nighttime temperatures of 65 to 70 degrees and daytime temperatures around 75 to 85 degrees. If you are going to display your plants on a windowsill, choose an east facing window. That would be ideal but a north window will work too. A rule of thumb is give your plants 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark or as close to that as you are able. If east or north facing windows aren't available where you want your display you can use a artificial light. You can use a plant light or a more decorative choice such as a grow bulb in a lamp that suits your decor.

You can feed your plant with each watering but if you do use half the rate of plant food suggested on the food label. An alternative is to use a natural plant food such as Monty's which is safe to use each time you water. Keep the soil moist but be sure to avoid overwatering. Overwatering is probably the most common cause of the demise of African violets. Water through the drainage hole in the bottom of the container by placing the container in a shallow pan and allowing the water to move up through the soil. If you water from the top avoid getting water on the leaves since that could cause leaf spot which will prevent the plant from doing well.

African violets bloom most prolifically if they are root bound so use a small clay pot or container. Your plants will bloom almost non-stop if you keep that in mind. Speaking of being prolific, one plant can lead to many more. Violets can be easily propagated by rooting the leaves! You can expand your African violet indoor garden or make gifts of African violets for your family and friends.

Wedel's has a variety of beautiful African violets to choose from so stop by and have a look. We'll answer all of your questions about proper soil, watering, containers, food, light sources and anything else you'd like to know about using African violets to brighten your home decor and making it as welcoming, warm and memorable as Grandma's.

Garden Natives

Pistachio Pagoda Dogwood
Cornus alternifolia 'Piszam'

Stunning, exotic, beautiful - all words used to describe this month's Garden Native. The Pistachio Pagoda Dogwood Cornus alternifolia 'Piszam' should be considered a prized addition to your elegant landscape.

Horizontal branching adds a linear dimension to a traditionally vertical display causing the eye to rest on the beauty of creamy white fragrant flowers in the spring, dark blue berries and fall color in tones of red. Burgundy foliage emerges in the spring and matures as thick, glossy hunter green leaves.

The mild texture of this tree can be accented or balanced when your composition includes 1 or 2 coarser or finer textured plants. The Pistachio Pagoda Dogwood can be used as an accent, centerpiece or as an addition to a naturalizing or woodland setting.

The versatility and stunning appearance of Pistachio Pagoda Dogwood Cornus alternifolia 'Piszam' will certainly be a source of pride in your landscape for years to come!

  Note from the Editor

It has been a busy time at the garden center. Just as fall planting is winding down for home gardeners and landscapers projects are ramping up here. We've been getting ready for Christmas, setting up displays, remodeling the annuals and perennials greenhouse into a forest of freshly cut Christmas trees and a wreath and garland making workshop. The sights, the sounds and the scents of Christmas are all here. I hope you take the time to stop by even if you've already gotten your Christmas tree and have your home decorated for the season; we'd still like to say, "hello" to you and share the results of all of our efforts.

Those working behind the scenes are just as busy. Fall trade shows have been attended, orders placed but there's still much to do. New items have to be checked in and entered into the database. New display layouts are being developed so everything can be conveniently displayed and easy to see. There are exciting, fun, quality new items to be had and this year is no different. Soon after Christmas, once all of the background work is done we will be getting ready for spring 2015! But there is still a lot of time to enjoy this season and all it has to offer.

Were you able to come by last year when Santa was at Wedel's? I hope you were but, if not, word has it he enjoyed his time with all of us so much then he said he definitely wanted to come back this year. You can imagine how busy he is now but he is taking time out of his schedule to be here today and tomorrow! We were so thrilled he said he would be back that we're seeing to it this year is even more fun than last. Age is no factor. He wants to visit with you, your kids, your grandkids, your great grandkids! He is even setting up a part of his workshop at Wedel's.

If you haven't checked everyone off of your list yet plan to come to Santa's Workshop! You'll be able to make Christmas decorations and gifts including wreaths, porch pots, bird houses, bird feeders, professional bows and more. Pot an amaryllis as a wonderful gift or to add to your Christmas spirit in your own decor. Oh, and don't forget to decorate a Christmas cookie. Santa isn't camera shy either.

Christmastime has begun at Wedel's. We hope you stop by, enjoy the atmosphere and take time to chat with us. We'd enjoy hearing about your 2014 growing season; what worked and what didn't and especially what you have in mind for 2015. We're here to help all year, any time of the year and that's the part of our jobs we most enjoy.

The 2014 Wedel's calendar turned out to be so popular that we're bringing it back in the 2015 edition. Not sure when to do what? Chances are good you'll find your answer printed in the calendar. Do you appreciate saving money? There are 4 coupons at the bottom of every month's page! The first day of Wedel's 21st Annual Spring Flower & Garden Expo is on Friday, March 20. (I just checked the calendar.) April 28 - apply pre-emergence crabgrass control. (Be sure to get your copy!)

Ready for another trivia question? Here we go! "What is authentic Italian mozzarella cheese made from?" The first reader to respond with the correct answer will win a $15.00 Wedel's gift card. The gift card must be picked up here at the garden center and remember, you are eligible to win once every 90 days. Good luck and have fun!

'Til next time,

Jim

I hope you and yours have the very Merriest Christmas ever!

What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past,
courage for the present, hope for the future.
It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings
rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace."
