A magical thing

Garden Natives

Hillside Black Beauty Bugbane

Cimicifuga racemosa "Hillside Black Beauty"

This month's garden native is somewhat unusual in that it features very dark foliage and, later in the growing season, bold spikes of fragrant, delicate blossoms that almost seem to hover above their parent plant. Though dark colors are often thought to recede it is because of the very deep purple of the leaves that Black Beauty is seductively eye-catching.

The flowers are excellent for cutting. It's attractive serrated compound leaves emerge dark green in spring, turning deep purple in color throughout the season. The brown fruits are carried on spikes from late summer right through to late winter. The deep purple stems are very effective at adding winter interest against bright, white snow.

Insects don't like bugbane and it is disease resistant. Rust is the most common problem and can be severe if the plant is stressed by drought. It is easily dealt with by using correct irrigation techniques and, if necessary, a common antifungal spray.

Hillside Black Beauty Bugbane grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years. As you plan your landscape improvements be sure to consider the variety of uses offered such as general garden use, mass planting, naturalizing and woodland gardens and container planting.

  Note from the Editor

Planning, getting ready, doing. That cycle repeats itself countless times throughout the seasons and the year. We've come to that time this year when that's what we're doing, looking forward to Christmas. The elves have been busy doing for a while now, here at the garden center. The sights, the sounds and the scents of Christmas are everywhere. If you're feeling the Christmas spirit, come by. If you aren't yet, come by; you will be before you leave.

As always, we have a fully stocked selection of live and life-like greens from sprigs to trees. We have a lot of freshly cut Christmas trees - little ones all the way to big ones. If big isn't big enough and you need huge, we can do that too. Let us know what you need and we'll take care of it. Wreaths? We have lots and lots of wreaths and are making more all of the time. If you want a plain wreath for a natural, woodland theme, we have 'em. Will something festive and fancy fill the bill? We have those too. If you want to chose your wreath and decorate it yourself, we have everything you need. Oh, and we have roping too!

I know what a busy time of year this is but I hope you will plan a little time to stop by and see us...just to say, "hi" or to do some gift shopping for the green thumber on your list. I've mentioned before what fun it is to open a package on Christmas day to find the gardening tool you were wishing you had last summer, the pair of gloves you should have replaced but didn't get around to doing it. Gardening surprises can be even more fun. You'll find lots of things here that you won't find in the box stores or malls. If you're just not sure or can't make up your mind, don't forget Wedel's gift cards. One size fits all, they never go out of style and they never expire.

When you stop by, take the time to simply enjoy the Christmas atmosphere, talk with the Wedel employees who have become friends over the gardening years and let us know what some of your plans are for this coming spring. Maybe we can't be there to work in your garden but we certainly can enjoy hearing all about it. Do you have any questions about your gardening projects? There's no better time than right now to have them answered.

Did you know Wedel's has a full color 2014 calendar for you? It is free with any purchase and is almost a mini almanac. Included are tips for each month of the year as well as significant dates already marked. I know, since you are a gardener or know someone who is, you'll appreciate and save a lot of money using the valuable coupons included on the calendar.

Santa Claus will be here on December 7 and 14. I can still remember the time I walked around an aisle in a toy store in my home town and...there he was!! Santa!! I remember exactly where he was sitting and that I really had the chance to tell him what I wanted for Christmas. And that was a long time ago but I'll never forget it. Bring your little ones to Wedel's and they can even have a picture taken with him.

This is another busy time of year but take some time to enjoy it with friends and family at Wedel's.

Ready for another trivia question? Here we go! What is the only state in the United States whose name is just one syllable? The first reader to respond with the correct answer will win a $15.00 Wedel's gift certificate. The gift certificate must be picked up here at the garden center and remember, you are eligible to win once every 90 days. Good luck and have fun!

I hope this is your best Christmas ever and that you have many more to come!

'Til next time,

Jim
