Baby Owls Visit

Perfect Pose
We were thrilled to receive these photos from Carol Murray! "Attached are a few photos of the baby owls that were in our backyard in June 2012 in Vicksburg, MI.  We had a total of six in one evening." Carol said.

We hope Carol keeps her camera handy and shares more photos of her backyard visitors with us. We would love to see examples of your landscapes, gardens, fountains, ponds, feathered friends etc. too. Wedel's truly is a community of friends with common interests and sharing those interests is what makes a community fun.

Here are two more of Carol's images.

Shadblow Serviceberry

Amelanchier canadensis
Shadblow in Blossom

Shadblow is best displayed in woodland, naturalized or native plant gardens especially in front of dark backgrounds which highlight its form, blossoms and fall colors. It is a plant that can be used very effectively along streams and ponds.

Branching ShadblowShadblow grows in the deciduous forest understory in the wild, along with common witchhazel and pagoda dogwood. It can be grown successfully in full sun as long as extreme heat and drought are avoided. Under severe summer drought stress it will often defoliate by mid August, which means the landscape will lose the rich orange and red autumn leaves. In sun or shade, a moist, well-drained soil, mulching, and summer irrigation are keys to success with this eye-catching species.

Shadblow Blossoms
If you enjoy birding and want to welcome a variety of backyard friends to your landscape, Shadblow Serviceberry is the perfect choice. Its berries offer meals for cardinals, waxwings, hairy woodpeckers, thrushes, catbirds, orioles and robins.

  Note from the Editor

Happy 2013 to all of our Wedel's News subscribers! Here's hoping this new year is your best one yet.

It's that time of year again. We were just closed for a couple of days to do our annual inventory and now things start to get busy (busier) again as we make preparations for spring 2013. As you know by now, these are the days when we keep an eye on the side door looking forward to the arrival of garden seed displays for the upcoming growing season. Before you know it you'll see ripe fruits and vegetables and flowers in full bloom...on our new seed packets. That couldn't happen at a better time of year! Just as winter gets to be its snowiest and coldest we'll have proof that there are warm days in the garden soon to be with us.

We still have Christmas decorations on the sales floor and nearly everything is on sale now through next Wednesday at 60% off. Now is the time to stock up for next...eh...later this year at the best prices you'll find. If you do come by you will see that, just as one season is ending, another is beginning. We will be making preparations for spring by getting the seed displays up as soon as they arrive as well as getting started preparing for Wedel's Spring Expo. Just like seeing the colorful seed packets, hearing those three words is really exciting. Soon we'll have the chance to see thousands of our friends over one weekend and will be able to show you what's new and what's tried-and-true returning to Wedel's.

As we make our preparations you do the same. Throw a log on the fire, grab a cup of coffee or tea or hot chocolate, a pencil and a tablet. Sketch out what you'd like to do in your landscape this year. Make a shopping list of things you want to have on hand so when you're ready and the weather is ready you'll have everything you need. Oh, and make a list of questions too. The coming days are perfect for stopping by the garden center and chatting with your friends at Wedel's. I'm sure you know, the best part of our job is working with you and helping you to be successful in all of your gardening and landscaping projects.

As I mentioned, we'll be getting ready for spring and for Expo so, if you come by soon, you'll be among the first to see what's new for 2013. I have it on good authority that there are cases of spring fever in the area and we have everything you need to treat it although the treatment won't make it go away. As a matter of fact, the treatment might just intensify it. And for green-thumbers, there's nothing wrong with that!

Ready for another trivia question? Here we go! The peach is a member of what scientific classification family?  The first reader to respond with the correct answer will win a $15.00 Wedel's gift certificate. The gift certificate must be picked up here at the garden center and remember, you are eligible to win once every 90 days. Good luck and have fun!

'Til next time,

Jim
