UC Santa Barbara is #2 in the world for scientific impact.  #1 for public institutions!
Issue 15 Summer 2014

Greetings!

Another piece of great news!   UC Santa Barbara is the #1 public institution for scientific impact..we  publish more in peer reviewed journals and are cited more by our colleagues than any other public institution in the WORLD. We hope to encourage you to come visit UC Santa Barbara to see why.  One reason why UC Santa Barbara is one of the world's leading institutions is because we collaborate well with industry.  Read on to learn of the progress with the Dow Center.  The other is that we have state-of-the-art facilities that you can use.

What UC Santa Barbara's Work-Study Program can do for you!
Some equipment highlights

The UCSB Nanofabrication Facility has advanced lithography tools for deep sub-micron to nanoscale dimensional structures.  The JEOL 6300FS direct write electron-beam lithography system is a state-of-the-art 100kV system with resolution to less than 10nm, sub-5nm layer-to-layer alignment accuracy, and fixturing for piece parts up to 6" wafers.  The ASML 5500/300 248nm DUV projection lithography system, configured for 4" wafers, can produce 150nm features over a large 21mm x 21mm field of exposure with better than 35nm alignment overlay.  These two systems are excellent for prototyping and research driven fabrication work.

The UCSB Nanofabrication Facility also houses a Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition System for ultra-thin, conformal, and high aspect-ratio dielectric and conductive film coatings.  The system is primarily used for Al2O3, HfO2, SiO2, ZrO2, TiO2, and conductive TiN.  Other materials being developed include Ru and WN conductive films.  The system handles small parts up to 8 inch wafers.

For more information about these and other equipment, please see the UCSB Nanofabrication Facility website: www.nanotech.ucsb.edu

UC Santa Barbara is the #1 public institution for scientific impact according to Leiden University rankings!
In the latest rankings by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands, UC Santa Barbara has placed second on the annual list of the top 500 major universities in the world in terms of impact in the field of the sciences. This represents a jump of five places from last year's annual ranking of the top 500. Click to find the rankings of all 550 research institutions.
You and the multi-user facilities at UC Santa Barbara

UC Santa Barbara is one of the most industry-friendly campuses of all of the UC's and it shows.  Per capita, engineering faculty at UCSB get more money for research from industry than any of the UCs and we provide productive and consistent forums for interaction with people from industry.

One of our greatest efforts is in providing leading edge multi-user laboratory facilities.  UC Santa Barbara currently houses 28 multi-user facilities. The campus' best known facility, the Nano Fabrication Facility (NanoFab), has 12,700 ft of clean room space to work in, which supports an average of 250 people/month within the facility doing a variety of projects in electronics, optics, materials, MEMs, physics and related efforts:  Over 40% of the more than 500 per annum user community are from the outside.

A common theme of the multi-user facilities at UC Santa Barbara is that they provide industry users affordable rates for the tools and processes they need, as well as training and support from dedicated and knowledgeable staff that is tailored to specific research and development needs.  In some facilities staff are also available for hands-on work. A detailed list of all of the facilities and equipment available at the multi-user facilities can be found - http://industry.ucsb.edu/sites/industry.ucsb.edu/files/pdf/Facilities%205%2029%2013.pdf

Getting great student workers at half the price
Work-Study is a need-based Federal Financial Aid program that provides graduate and undergraduate students with part-time employment opportunities on- and off-campus. Student earnings help defray the cost of their education while complementing and reinforcing the student's academic and/or career goals. In addition to the numerous benefits to students, employer benefits include:

A partial subsidy (50%) of student wages paid by the Work-Study Program to for-profit entities,

  • Free employment outreach to students who have identified a field of study and/or career goals directly related to the agency they work for,
  • Performance of several key administrative functions by our Unit (Issuing paychecks, employment document tracking, assessment and deduction of taxes, etc.) for the agency and,
  • An additional connection to the UCSB campus and its resources herein for future outreach efforts.
If you are interested in the Work-Study Program for your agency or would like additional information about the Program, please feel free to contact our Unit (805-893-4382; [email protected]) or visit our website: http://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/WorkStudyEmployers.aspx. Your interest in fostering employment opportunities and community development for our students is greatly appreciated.
We always appreciate any input you may have on how we can improve, so please don't hesitate to send us your feedback. Thank you for your continued interest in our program. For further information, please visit the Industry Center website at: www.industry.ucsb.edu
