The Australian Human Rights Commission has established principles to enhance the safety and well-being of international students in Australia. These rights are intended to support student advocacy with governments, service providers and other local agencies. Click here for more info about international student rights in Australia.
Program Updates

University of Sydney

 

A team of four University of Sydney undergraduates finished at the head of the pack in a global digital media competition with their project to encourage cycling. The Design Computing students planned a large interactive display for a pedestrian tunnel in downtown Sydney with dynamic images that change as people walk past. University of Queensland

 

University of Queensland (UQ) engineering students are benefitting from using a state-of-the-art heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) laboratory which opened last year. About 300 students have used the lab to put concepts learned in class into practice. Mining company Newcraft funded the lab, and has pledged $480 000 to UQ engineering scholarships over the next 5 years. Learn about this interactive learning centre here.

Hosts third-most foreign students in world

Australia is the third-most popular country for learning abroad, hosting 7% of the world's international students. Click here to examine Australia-related highlights from the report.
Australian universities hop on MOOC express
New online learning projects

Example Image - 120 x 85 pixelsSeveral Australian institutions are on the cusp of launching MOOCs, full courses delivered online to anyone, anywhere, for free: University of Melbourne (via Coursera platform- click for info), University of New South Wales (via OpenLearning- course description here), and University of Western Australia (Class2Go- read more here). University of Queensland is developing several MOOCs as well, and exploring delivery options (click for info).

Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) 46th Annual Conference - 4-7 November, Montreal, QC

CBIE's annual conference brings together hundreds of international education professionals from across Canada and around the world. The theme of this year's event is A Fine Balance: Harmonizing International Education Policies and Practices. Participants from educational institutions, government and industry representing all levels and types of education will be in attendance, including Mark Darby and Fareeda Chand from the Australian Government and Jennie Lang from the University of New South Wales. NAFSA Region 8 Conference - 14-17 November, Alexandria, VA

The NAFSA: Association of International Educators Mid-Atlantic region conference will feature workshops, presentations, an exhibit hall and town hall meeting. Melissa Chapman from the University of Melbourne will be presenting "Pin It! Tweet It! Post It! Engaging Diverse Audiences" on 15 November and "I Speak English, What Else is There to Know: Orientation for Study Abroad" on 16 November.
