Letter from the Executive Director

OMF Web Director Brian Hiatt and I were fortunate enough to spend last week at the 4th annual Code for America Summit, presenting our work on the Open Media Project (OMP) for Governments. The OMP is OMF's new open- source software as a service that helps make video of government proceedings more accessible to the public, and we were proud to present it among some of the most exciting and innovative technologies aimed at improving government efficiency and transparency.

It was inspiring to spend the week with tech visionaries who genuinely care more about the potential their work has to make a difference than they care about the potential their work has to make them rich. CFA hosted an Ignite event that, despite having the same structure as the Denver (or any) Ignite event, the mood was worlds apart. We heard from cities who have succeeded and failed while daring to change the status quo, cities making their budgets public-facing and web-accessible, states embracing open-source, and more.

As we try to help cities and states embrace a smart, new approach to organizing government video and documents for public use, OMF will be in Minneapolis this week presenting the OMP at the NATOA conference with our partners at Tightrope Media Systems. This time, DOM Station Director Ann Theis, OMP Account Exec Gavin Dahl, and AmeriCorps VISTA member Robbie McBeath will be representing OMF.
Open Music Sessions at Denver Open Media, October 3
On the first Friday of each month, DOM hosts a free community event with local performance groups, musical acts and nonprofit partners. These events are broadcast live on Comcast Channel 57 in Denver as well as streamed on DOM's website.  Events are cablecast and streamed live in Denver Open Media's Studio A.

Join DOM for the October 3rd Open Music Sessions featuring a live music performance by punk band Dirty Few.

New Laptops for Checkout at DOM
Rally Software has generously donated 10 Macbooks for Denver Open Media's member checkout! We are pleased to announce that the 2011 Macbooks will be loaded with the full Adobe Creative Suite and be available for free member checkout for up to a 1-week period.

We spoke with Geri Mitchell-Brown, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Rally Software. "As a Certified B Corp, Rally Software is dedicated to investing in the local community and giving back in impactful ways through our Rally For Impact program and Foundation. We are excited to support the Open Media Foundation's work to ensure everyone in this community has access to the training and tools they need to bring about positive social change."

The Open Media Foundation requested an initial donation of 10 Mac laptops, which we will maintain and manage for community use via the equipment check-out system at Denver Open Media. Non-members will be charged a rental fee. Each system is loaded with the full Adobe Creative Suite, iMovie and GarageBand. They will be maintained by our technical staff and will be wiped after each use - so please don't store anything on them! If the program is successful, we would hope to continue replenishing and upgrading the inventory of laptops as Rally continues to upgrade their technology.

Services - Video Production
The Video Production Department, part of the Services offered by the Open Media Foundation, recently completed work on two projects.

Rising Above: Communities Coming Together to Keep Kids in School and Learning is a documentary short just completed with The Denver Foundation. The documentary focuses on the school-to-prison pipeline, a "disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems." The Denver Foundation has created a cohort to address this problem, bringing together students, parents, and schools to create change. View a trailer for the documentary here.

Family Star Montessori school has been a loyal OMF video production client for the past several years. This year's video was created for Family Star's annual fundraising breakfast and builds on the event's theme, "Shine Your Light." It's also one of our first client videos to utilize one of Denver Open Media's newest pieces of equipment - the Sony A7s camera - and we're very pleased with the results. See it for yourself here!
